I have the chance to pick up an AT4050 for $300. I need this mic for vocals, acoustic gtr, and as a room mic= an all-around kinda mic. I have 2 Rode NT5's, SM7, AT3035, and some 57's. And Im going to tape (tascam 388). I was looking at the KSM32 and the Studio Projects T-3. But for the price Im thinking the 4050 might kick ass. Any advice would be really helpful...since I gotta grab it soon if I want it.
thanks...

The 4050 for 300 dollars is a GREAT deal. They are good microphones, and multi-pattern, so you can use it all over the place. I like it on certain acoustic guitars, and as an ambient mic low to the floor about 4 feet out from the kick drum on certain types of music...

The 4033 is a great mic as well, and they are TOTALLY different.

I think this mic would find a home regardless of the mic selection. I have one, along side a TON of other mics, and I value it.

Given your current mic selection: get it! It may become one of your go-to vocal microphones as well.... Great all around mic I guess is what I am trying to say.

ABSOLUTELY. I have a pair of them, and love them. Very transparent, true mics. THey go on ebay for 800/pair so you are doing well at 300 bucks.

Great price, great mic. Get it! Useful on most anything -- vocals, overheads, guitars etc. It has a mediocre shock mount, but you can live with that.

shady craigslist...

wow. just called the guy I was gonna buy it from and it sounded REAL shady. I wont be able to test the mic before I buy it (he wants to meet in Union Square for the exchange), and it seems like it may have been dropped or injured somehow...not sure if its gonna work out. damn.
but Ive been doing a little research and Ive come across a mic in my price range that might do the trick. Anyone know about the MXL V69m?
I never thought about getting a tube mic...but all i want is a good mic that will rock on the ACguitar and sound good on vocals (an option to the sm7).
Im going for an honest sound ---eg: neil young (harvest/after the goldrush) and Elliott Smith (eithor/or). I dont want a mic thats too bright or too dark---something kinda in the middle.
ahhhhh...there's so many choices....

Hey Joel...
I checked out the copperphone and bought one immediately. great people and what seems like a great mic. should be a fun thing to have for the studio and live stuff. i think the copperphone will find a great home w/ my banjo, piano, and gtrs when i need a sound to cut through...

Awesome! Mark Pirro is great, and the copperphone is one of my favorite mics! I really love those things. Not just lo-fi.... Just cool...
Sounds pretty sweet about the 4050... not really... Meeting in Union square would even be a pain in the ass, as the trains are F'd up today by a fire at W4th.....

A 4050 at full price is a good deal, considering what you can do with them. $300 is even better...not quite like the $200 I paid for mine, but still... :)
Go for it, you won't regret it.

This is going to sound like an oddball suggestion -- and it sort of is -- but honestly, if you use a strong enough pop filter and work with positioning a little in order to minimize plosives ... an Octava MC-012 (Russion version) can make for a stunning vocal mic; again, if placed properly. Detail is excellent (but not hyped), proximity effect can be flattering; bass response big and smooth (one of the reasons they work so well on toms).

When you really look at it, it's probably the best option for $100 or less on vocals. Just that one doesn't normally think of it as a "vocal mic," and it takes a lot more work ; you can't just set it up and go.

I absolutely love mine! Use it on a number of things. Two thumbs up! ;)

Hope you got one, they are gone for now.
Nah...I missed out...didn't have the $$$ right then and there. That's ok though because I think an MD421 would better suite my needs right now(guitar cab, metal vox,etc.).I'll check that link every once in a while and maybe catch one next time. :)
