4033 againts a B1

Just got both of these mics recently and used them on a session the other day. Tried the B1 on acoustic guitar and it sounded really nice. Then we were going to track vox. She's a mildly gritty blues style singer so I thought it would be a good chance to try out the 4033. I had used one from a friend a few months back for a male vox on a session and thought it captured his "grit" nicely, but when I tried my new 4033 on her I had to work with it a little bit more. Did a track with some off axis stuff that I was pleased with and a track where I had her stand a couple extra feet from the mic to get the feel of the song. But on both her voice seemed a bit... well, not muffled but a hint to much bottom for her voice, not enough presence (which was not what I was expecting from the 4033). So I had her switch to the B1 for the next tune and it turned out to be exactly what her voice needed, especially for the tune. Hit the pocket right on, no playing with it.
Can't wait to try them both out on more sources, but just thought this was interesting.
 
On some things, an SM57 is better than a Neuman U87....

different mics = different response = better on some things than others

The nature of the beast....

What a shock. Why don't you bless us with the benefit of your wisdom and actually say something constructive for a change, instead of just knee-jerk reacting every time someone praises an "797 Audio/Studio Projects" Microphone. Would that be so frigging hard?

Honestly, you guys are the ones with a problem.

Someone posted that they liked a particular mic . . . DJL posts his conflicting opinions about the same mic . . .

And you guys jump all over the guy because he has an opinion.

Jeezus Christ guys. I don't like Fannie May chocolate. Are you going to jump all over me for that because I prefer Godiva, and tell me I'm some sort of a raving lunatic who has a vendetta against Fannie Maye? I can't stand that goddamn Marshall v67, and I openly state it whenever/wherever possible as a favor to some people, but no one seems to jump on my ass over it saying I have a vendetta against Mogami.

You guys are far more dangerous than someone like DJL. He's just a lone renegade, while you guys are more like a Lynch Mob.

No, I jumped all over DJL because he offered nothing constructive, as usual. The exact words were "I think it's crap. :D". I could live with an actual, reasoned opinion on the subject, but none was offered, nor will any be likely to appear in my lifetime. I wouldn't exactly call DJL a "Lone Renegade", because that would be giving him too much credibility. I prefer to think of him a Lone Nutjob, but hey, that's just my opinion, YMMV.

And, Godiva is clearly superior to Fannie Mae, so you'll get no argument from me about that. Anyone who says different is itchin' for a fight. ;)
 
Plus, DJL was saying that antofants opinion was crap, not the mic. He was responding to the bit where antofants said that he found it interesting that the B1 outperformed the 4033.

That's what got me annoyed. If he had disagreed civilly, or had anything to back up his inflammatory rhetoric, I could respect him, but his bias against SP verges on paranoid. I'm just waiting for him to blame Alan Hyatt for the deficit or something. Wait, does he know what the deficit is?

In short, DJL is an idiot.
 
Look, I figure any informed opinion is valuable.

I don't care if the guy's a lunatic or not. At least he's a lunatic with a lot of mics. :D And if 12 guys think a particular mic is brilliant, and he thinks it's crap, then I want to hear about it. If I need more detail, I can ask him: "Why, DJL, do you feel it's crap?" and I'm sure he'll answer me somewhat in detail.

Maybe I'm crazy, but when I watch those commercials where they say "4 out of 5 dentists recommend sugarless gum," I want to hear what the 5th dentist has to say . . . and I'm not going to automatically discount it because it goes against the grain.
 
FWIW, I really was just trying to state what Bear said in the first reply (certain mics for certain applications) and thought I'd share my experience and mild surprise on the circumstance. I mean, I have this cute little Radio Shack mic that I've used on certain situations over my friend's U87. It's odd, but it works sometimes.:)
 
I think both this thread and the B1 is crap. The thread smells like SP spam and the B1 is a halfass mic that is kind of like a jack of all trades and a master of none... I'd put it in a LDC class next to the SDC AKG C1000S. Oh and I think freshmattyp and cominginsecond are pricks, but this a mic forum and not about what I think about them or what they think about me... it's about mic's and what we think about them. Did freshmattyp or cominginsecond offer something constructive in this thread, I don't so... they just follow me around tagging my post with crap like they did above... and I think it's because they have nothing to offer other than calling me names.

I said that they sound very similar, and that the B1 was reputed to sound better than the B3, so if I like a B3 on a source, chances are a B1 would sound good too. Now that I own both of these mics, I know that that's generally true.

I'm sorry if you cannot grasp a subtle, nuanced argument. Next time I'll state it like this:

"B3 GOOOOD!!!!"

"B1 BETTER, BUT SIMILAR!!!!!"

Is that dumbed down enough for you?
 
I don't exactly think the B1 is crap . . . but I do think the 4033 will spank it in to submission about 99% of the time.

Generally speaking, and not on all sources, obviously. But 99% sounds about right, though.

Is that detailed enough? :D

I suppose not. How about this? : In most cases, when comparing a cheap mic like the B1 to a good mic like the 4033, a chain of events happens in your brain's chemistry that causes the release of endorphines that we consciously interperate as a phenomenon called "better sound" coming out of a better mic like the 4033.
