40-4 Packing

Here are some packing photos from my latest ebay purchase. I'm not sure how this measures up to preferred methods, but the machine did arrive injury free.

There was 2 inch foam surrounding the 40-4(including the bottom) as well as some packaged peanuts to brace the reel hub area. To fill in any excess space the seller used loose peanuts. I wasn't very happy about that because some styrofoam particles managed to make their way into the 40-4 via the air vents. I hope this serves as an example of some sort, good or bad.

All I can say is thank God the 40-4 arrived in apparently undamaged condition. Still, I would check internally (take back cover off) for any abnormalities from handling impacts. Check also if the frame or anything else is bent.

Generally speaking though, it's an ok packing job (the seller did try) but personally I'd never send an item out like that. Still too risky but luckily the recorder arrived ok.

The "foam" that the seller used looks like "Polyurethane" which is a low density foam that although offers good shock absorbency and resiliency, it is more suitable for light loads and not anything approaching the size and weight of this recorder.

All in all the seller's packing job is better, if you can believe, than most of the stuff I got (and got damaged). I recall a similar piece, as your 40-4, which was just bubble wrapped. Arrived severely damaged.

Anyway, I'm glad your recorder came in good condition.

I'm thanking my lucky stars that this turned out so good. :) The heads on the thing look virtually brand new, and after I gave them a thorough cleaning and demagnitizing my playback sounded very nice. I wouldn't say better than my 388, only different in a good way. I think the two machines will have a nice partnership.

I have a guy who's going to give it a once-over and resolve any issues for an estimated $100. I'll be into the machine about $300 after shipping and repairs. I feel pretty good about that amount knowing I'll probably get a few good years out of it. :D

I'm really glad things turned out well. I really mean it! :)

$100 bucks is very little to have someone give it the 'ol once over. It's a worthy investment! Great deal!!
