Excuse my prolific remixing of this tune, but it is the first one I have taken this far, and wanting to get feedback on mixing technique, as I have a bunch more about to be taken through this process.

Main thing to keep in mind: Vox will be retracked with a better mic in the near future, I know they currently don't sound too hot

But, latest alterations:
ran the bass guitar line (midi line, sampler in Reason) out through my Johnson J-station
brought overall mix levels down, compressed the drums to bring down some transients so that i could bring the snare up in the mix.
Brought the volume of the synth in the intro way down too.

If you guys don't mind one more kick at the cat here, I'd appreciate feedback. In the next few weeks I will post a few more tunes, the next ones with me singing instead of my partner.

Now I realize some things I need to do to make this mix better: need more compression!
The mix is weak, due to some drum transients being too high. I tried a little compression, but I need to use more to bring them down so that I can have the rest of the mix level higher...it is too weak. I just did a side by side comparison of this tune and Radiohead's "bones" from "the Bends" which has similar dynamics/instrumentation, and man, is that song HUGE compared to my mix. SO much to do, so much to learn still.

Focus on the vox. I don't think you need distortion on the lead vox, unless that's the crappy mic you were refering to. Just a little better take and a different reverb. I think the back up vocals are panned too hard right as well. Bring them closer to center.

I would definitely get rid of the distortion on the vocals.. It sounded wrong as soon as it came in.. the performance was good, but that vocal sound isn't helping.. Things get relatively loud at times too, and the drums get drowned out when it happens.. needs a remix.. biggest complaint is that vocal sound..

The mix is so much better than mix #1. I noticed a much better bass part. When the drums kick in it sounds real good.

I agree on the vocals, the distortion/telephone effect doesn't fit the song. I think just a hint of a nice room reverb would be nice. The vocals have some execution issues here and there - syncing (e.g., listen to "blisters" at 1:37) and pitch. I'd also like to hear what they'd sound like if you doubled them.

I think you bumped down the synth a bit too much. Maybe split the difference from the two extremes.

There is a pop at the very begining and another one at the end.

It's certainly improving. Keep it up.

Thanks again for all the comments. The vocals obviously need retracking, and indeed, I am not happy with the effect on them.
I need to go back a few paces on this tune to get the mix to sit right.
First, I need to retrack vocals, and compress them properly...didn't do this the first time. Next, I need to finalize the drum track (get the right fills/cymbal hits), then split the midi track to individual tracks, convert each to audio, compress them, mix the drums back together, and then I think I can get the various parts to sit right.

TripleM, thanks for listening to all three mixes so far. I appreciate the effort, and the mix has improved largely due to yours and others feedback. I will check out what you have on the board over the weekend and give you some feedback too.

My pleasure. Anything I have is way down the stack by now. I should have something new up in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to your thoughts when it's up.
