3mic drum set up. Centering the Kick?

Master of the Obvious
I've lately been trying the 3Mic set up... 2sticks above snare, 2sticks over the shoulder ect...

I'm digging it. Yet, the part about adjusting the shoulder mic to center the Kick doesn't seem to be doing Jack. If it's pointed more toward the floor tom or at the kick or at the snare yeilds the same results... the kick doesn't seem to move at all in the panning spectrum.

So far I seem to get the best sound w/ the shoulder mic pointing at the middle of the snare just like the over snare mic. & panned at about 10 & 2. But the kick is just off center and no matter where I point the shoulder mic the kick won't move.

Any Suggestions,
B.

A way to set the mics that is more accurate is to use a string and tape it to the center of the snare and kick drum and leave a bunch of slack in between. Pull it up to the height of the 'over the snare' mic and tie a knot there. Use the string to make sure the second mic is the same distance from the kick and snare. That way you are guaranteed that the snare/kick are dead center and there should be minimal phase problems.
