388 parts needed or buy my parts deck?

Do the reel-servo adjusments, specifically the tension roller position.

That should clean up any tension issues or unbalanced servos producing extra drag. Don't give up. This sounds like an easy one.;)

HAHAHAHA,

somehow i had a feeling Dave would say that!

Ok, I'll give it another shot in the morning.

I was having trouble getting the front off.

Do i need to remove the head block to get at the servos?

One of the things that has put me off this deck a little is that a lot of the screws are missing. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence that it has been
well cared for.

I'm picturing some tweeker tearing it apart.

thanks

...

The Reel-Servo card is under the top panel, not in the tape deck area.
Consult the manual for the adjustment points of the tension arms.;)

ahh....
So thats where it is.
So if i dont have the test tape, tentelo meter, or spring gauge, can i just
use a regular tape and fiddle with it using the adjustment screw from figure 1-3-9 until i get a good balance?
If so, should the tape be in the middle with half of it on the take up reel?

thanks

OK,
Got the transport functions working ok now.
Not perfect, but pretty good.
havn't been able to get it record yet. I'll try again after dinner.
thanks

thanks guys,

Yes, i followed the instructions in the manual.
Kind of wacky adjusting the servos.

I feel like there is some fine tuning that could be done somewhere in
the tape path. something might be binding slightly.
But overall, much, much better.

At least it looks like the major components are functional.

Thanks for taking the time to encourage me, i'll work on it some more tomorrow.

Thank you!

You could eyeball the reel table height vs. the deck plate, itself. You could guage it with feeler guages or some small measuring tool held up to the "rim".

If the deck-plate was removed, you could inspect the brakes and reel table height. IF the brakes are not releasing fully, it would cause excess drag on the system. Reel table height problems,... (same), if it was too low and rubbing on the chassis.;)

Hey guys,

First of all, thanks for all the help so far.

I got through the servo adjustment ok and it goes forward
and backwards at the correct speeds.

And it actually records!

Playback is a little wobbly, though.
I have a feeling that the servos could be adjusted better somehow.
The reel tables look ok for height when i measured them.

Any chance it's my tape?
I put on a brand new roll of quantigy from a local supplier who said it was good batch and they haven't had any complaints.
It's a reputable supplier.
