388. Fast-forwards, Rewinds, but Doesn't Play

It was working fine a few days ago, and last time I looked at the drive belt it was also fine. What could be going on?
 
That’s your problem.

It won’t stay in PLAY u less the capstan drives the tape. Now you have to figure out why the capstan isn’t spinning.

When you raise the tension arms can you hear or feel the capstan motor spin up? It’s pretty quiet so you have to listen close.
 
Please don’t get hung up on feeling it. If you can hear it, then something is not right with the capstan belt. Open it up and fix it. Is it a new drive belt or the original? They all need replaced by this age.
