388 effects return question?

hey guys,
I've looked all over the board for the answer to this question and the owners manual isnt very discriptive on this point.

My question is: how do i get the effects from the mixer into my recordings.
I used the 1/4" effects send out and used the 1/4" effects return 1 and 2 for stereo. All the gains are turned up, Master, channel, gains and pans. I hear the effects (reverb and echo) just fine in the mixer and thru the headphones, but when i record the playback is dry. so the effects arent making it into the recorder.
Am i missing something, maybe a switch or something im not aware of, or do i need to patch the effects a different way.

hey,
as you're doing it now you're keeping your tape dry (which can be beneficial later i you don;t like the effect application). if you were to mix down from your deck the effects would be on the mixed down copy .. also i think you can turn on your pre/post button to get the effect on the trk if you want it to tape. I generally don;t put effects to tape..only add them in the mixdown process.

I do apprieciate your input, it is better to add effects later, i just dont have enough effects units to do what i want. Like a little reverb on drums and delay on vocals and maybe somethin on somethin on somethin on somethin. hehe
