3440 Fast Forward just broke!

As usual, I was just about to rev up my wifey about our new hobby by playing her a recording I just did on the oldschool equipment, and FF button just stopped working.

She knew to clear out fast while I silently formed a major aneurysm.

The FF button will stop REWIND or PLAY, but that's all. I'm really good at fixing stuff (that's why I have analog!) and have just ordered the service manuals, but was wondering if any of you guys have had to fix this problem.

Any tips?
 
What happens if you press the FF button with a little more gusto then you normally would? Will the function engage then?

I ask that because I used to have a TASCAM 38 recorder with a similar issue on the rewind button which would kick in if I pressed it just a bit harder and there-after more frequently to work out the crud that had built up inside the switch.

I tried it, but no luck.

I may have to order parts and would like to stock a few commonly needed repair items. Any suggestions?

Some history...

Parts replaced:
capstan motor
belt
pinch roller

Serviced by Norman's Electronics, Atlanta GA:
"Cleaned and realigned mech. Check P/B & record levels. Final check OK."
 
i dont want to sound like a douche but is the tape threaded right
 
Ha! No problem, sometimes it's the simple things. But I'm halfway into the reel and it's tight as a tick.
 
Do you have the remote control for the unit, RC70? If so, does the FF work from there? If so it might be a bad FF transport switch on the machine

Otherwise, if you don't have the remote you can still simulate the remote FF function by using a jumper wire between the ground pin on the remote connector and the FF function. Pin 2 is Fast Forward. Pin 8 is Ground.

If it still doesn't work after that, then check the fuse for the take up reel motor.

If after that it still doesn't work, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Let us know.

As things in my life sometimes turn out... it's working again! I just decided to test it one more time and it seems fine. Did it overheat and trip something? I was on it while, maybe an hour.

There's nothing in there that can "trip". There are only fuses that would blow if something overloaded.

In short, I don't know what happened but glad to hear it's now working again!
