3 track acoustic tune

Hi all
Here's something a little different from me. The song itself is 8 years old, but I recorded it quickly today after work. It's just 1 rhythm and 1 lead guitar (improvised) and 1 vocal track. I bought a new acoustic recently and wanted to hear how it sounds. I know there are lots of flaws in the recording (pops etc)... this is just a quicky.The vocal is one take and has flat spots etc, but that's not what I'm interested in. Just the guitar sound....

Very nice indeed. Is that rhythm a 12 string?

The lead kind of warps in and out a lot and sometimes stalls the song IMO. Hard to say what it needs, maybe just a little less improv and a touch of compression or more consistant playing. Not that it's bad, mind you, it's just awkward in some places, especially the beginning. It also kind of mishappenly moves around in the stereo field...were you moving a lot while playing? (stereo mic'ing a lead might not be necessary and can be bad if the player has to move around a lot)

I'm reminded of Days of the New here, except the acoustics sound like acoustics and the song is more believable.

Great job, I'm jealous of your guitar sound and voice!

......I know this guitar man:D .....and it sounds wonderful. It has a dry sounding quality to it that is very nice.
What was the mic placement on each mic? This song is definitely worthy of development......... great stuff, as usual.

Thanks for going easy on me guys....As I said this was a real rush job before I had to go get my siamese cat from the vet. Seems she managed to get on of my fish hooks in her belly. She's fine.

If I do actually develop this tune, I'll worry more about those issues, but I'm in the beginnings and middles of 4 different full projects right now. Just trying for better acoustic sounds. jcmm- Thanks for the listen man...I left the lead and the vocal down so that the acoustic sound could be heard...which is the point of the thread...In a full production, I'll raise them...Thanks again for the ears.

Guernica- I think this is probably about the tone I'll use for "Look Away"...what do you think? The Oktava (The other Oktava shipped today by the way) was about 2 feet in front at 11 o'clock facing the 12th fret. The Bheringer (thinking about replacing with a SP C3) was 2-3 feet overhead, 2 feet in front at 10:30 or so, sometime after South Park. (bad joke...sorry) There's the sound of big trucks all through this track, and my Computer fan, and the fish tank and my gum...
 
Oh hey Jeff...just missed ya. Thanks. Yours were the first Oktavas I heard. I loved that track and had to try some for the price. Got sent two damaged ones that got mixed in, and I'm still waiting for one of them to arrive. Nice mic though. I'll check out that PM now....peace!

Hi Muzeman- It's a Seagull, made in Canada. I used to play one a long time ago, and decided to get another one. They're very inexpensive...this one is about $400 and is beautiful to look at, plays real nice, and sounds pretty good too. My Guild is getting a pretty warped neck from too much travel, so I needed something new. Thanks for checking out the tune.
 
I love the chord changes in this thing, man. Recorded beautifully, as usual. Near as I can tell on these COMP speakers, the mix is perfect. I'll give you a more detailed response later, Tom.

nice job.... I'm going to try your mic placement on the next acoustic strum tune I do. What else did you do to the tracks? Mic pre? mixer? oh, and glad to hear the cat is ok., like muzeman, I've got a plenty kicking around here.

JR#97- ya, I pretty much tried a few takes of the guitar in various positions, starting with some that I read about. Those ones failed me though...probably the strange mic combination of the Bheringer and the Oktava. This one had a nice variety of frequencies to me, sounding like two different guitars. It just seemed to work for whatever reason. And it kept the majority of the traffic outside out of distraction. This is actually my first recording with new pre's. It's a pair of Studio Projects VTB-1's. So I guess it's a test for that too. Nice units.

very nice... I might have left off the lead guitar and just passed this as an incredible one take, live take...no overdubs. ( A nice stereo guitar and great singing .... )

it certainly shines as a quickie...that's for sure.

Okay, that intro is... bizarre...it actually took a couple of listens to figure out that you weren't screwing around...That sounds like a slam, but it's not at all; it's just intentionally discordant, and I'm a little slow when you get me outside of the "D, C, G" box. I like the gitwork on the left @ 3:00 in. Very tasty. Now dammit, this is EXACTLY the kind of mix I try to get...not cluttered, simple instrumentation...but I fuck even THIS up. And the fact that you recorded it in probably 1/20th the time that I need makes me like you even less.

About the Seagull...I'm glad you posted that. I know all my crap sounds exactly the same, but I actually own quite a few guitars, and I'm getting ready to let my daughter graduate from her Baby Taylor to a "real" guitar... I've played a few of those [Seagulls] and I've always been surprised how good some of them sound and play, especially for the money. It's kinda' hit or miss, I've noticed, as I can pick up 2 right next to each other, same model, and one can sound great and the other...well, not so great. I guess that's true with most anything made out of wood, BUT ANYWAY, I've never bought one because I don't know anybody who has had one for any length of time. I feel a little safer buying one for her after hearing your endorsement.
