this method rules!
This method is great. I'm so glad people still refer to it. It's my starting point. With a great, tuned kit, a decent room and a good drummer, you can't go wrong with this.
I use some shure ksm33 for the o'heads and a d112 on the kick, sounds simple, is simple. Works for almost every style.
When the kids want more attack and oomph I usually add *one* of three mics. Either a 57( type mic aimed at the snare, or a 57 type mic aimed at the side of the snare on the kick drum side (get some attack from the kick drum) or a 414 underneath the snare to get some snare rattle and some kick attack.
