3 mic technique for micing drums...

Can anyone point me in the direction of that thread which describes the technique for micing drums with only 3 mics?
The search here is slower than slow.

I can point you to what Mike Hedges described as "the Glyn Johns way" in "Behind the Glass"....buy the book.....

"....2 overheads, both 2 1/2 sticks length from the snare, the 1st over the floor tom looking toward the snare and the 2nd directly over the center of the snare, then adjust for phase.....the kick drum would go in front of the kick drum.....3 mics....viola....."

of course alot like to add a snare mic in there........

D4L , I just did a kit based on R'man's set up.

(or the Glyn Johns way)

Worked like a charm.

I went a little farther out than 2 1/2 drumsticks (41 inches) and pulled the "left" mic just to the left side of the snare where the edge of the hats were and aimed across the snare.

The "right" OH was at about 8" to 12" off the drummers right shoulder and aimed across the snare but slightly up towards the outer edge or the left rack tom.

Got a great picture of the kit and no phase issues with the other mics.

Didnt even have to flip the phase of the kick mic.

BTW I was using Groove Tubes MD1b tube mics.

this method rules!

This method is great. I'm so glad people still refer to it. It's my starting point. With a great, tuned kit, a decent room and a good drummer, you can't go wrong with this.

I use some shure ksm33 for the o'heads and a d112 on the kick, sounds simple, is simple. Works for almost every style.

When the kids want more attack and oomph I usually add *one* of three mics. Either a 57( type mic aimed at the snare, or a 57 type mic aimed at the side of the snare on the kick drum side (get some attack from the kick drum) or a 414 underneath the snare to get some snare rattle and some kick attack.
