Here are the three mics I am looking at. Which do you think I should choose and why? I will be recording everything from melodic and acoustic rock to hardcore... So which ever mic you think would do best for these purposes. Here they are!

AKG D112
Electro-Voice ND868
Sennheiser E602

So whaddaya guys thinks?

Thanks in advance!

I would look into the Audix D6 as well. I got one for around $169 at GC.

Ok, make it 4 mics... can you give me a reason why you like this mic over say any of the others>? thanks!

I like the D6 more than D112. The D112 has yielded some boingy tones for me, and the D6 yields a really good sound all of the time for me, with a minimum of fuss in the way of placement.

I haven't used the other two mics.

D-112 would be my choice of the three

Of the three mics you mentioned, I like the D-112 the best for kick drums. I've owned one for several years and have had very good results with it. Placement is the key with most kick drums. ;)

Imo

I've owned all of the mics listed and I ended up with the EV mic when the smoke cleared.
I read an article in a mag that covered a kick mic shoot out. It included the EV mic that at that time I had never tried. After some top engineers chose it over several others I had to give it a try........Man it's phat. Rent one and give it a test drive.

thanks so much everyone. Especially cgibson. knowing that you have tried all of the mics is really helpful. I am going to try the d112 and the ev mic and see which I like best. Thanks for your input everyone!

I liked the at-pro25 because it was under $50 and it is a rebaded audix D6. ;)

Darrin I am not doubting you but im curious where you got your info? I own an at-pro 25 and have never heard anything about it being a rebadged audix D6. Maybe im thinking about the wrong audix model but the AT pro doesn't look anything like the D6? I mainly use the pro 25 for floor toms, i thought it kind of sucked as a kick mic. If they are indeed the same mic, im glad I never shelled out the cash for the D6.

I have a number of ATM25 for kick and toms. They are not scooped, but deliver a fat, natural tone. To my ears, they sound like drums, not basketballs. The ATM25 doubles well as a bass cab mic, and a bassy voice mic for screechy type voices.

I was using SM57 for awhile, but the ATM25 have better pattern control and a beefier tone. I was also using SM57 for snare, but have since moved to a pair of ATM23HE for this. I have recently acquired an Audix D4, but the jury is still out on this one, as I've not not had any free time to work with it.

I find that an odd claim, since (to my recollection), the pro 25 came out way before the D6 came out.

Either way, I like the D6 for generally good sound and "no fuss" placement. I like the ATM25 for the big, kick sound down low. I don't like the D112 for the basketball-type sound (evidently if you get the placement wrong). I have no experience with the EV mic.

Is it just me or can any1 else noticed the D6's reallly HYPED sound? not for my taste...i'm into more natural sounding mics.

This is utter garbage. I've owned both of the mics, and they could not possibly sound any different. I've posted sound clips to my comparison of these mics before, but here it is again:

Download those and tell me again that the AT-Pro25 is a rebadged Audix D6.

Who told you that, BTW? They need to be edumucated.

I recommend that you at least audition a Sennheiser MD421... plus the MD421 is a great mic for many other things besides kick. ;)

cominginsecond,

Have you had any chance to compare the D6 with the ATM25? I currently have the Pro25, and I don't like it too much...though it's "useable". None of the local stores around here have the ATM25 that I could try out. Thanks.

do any of you have recordings with any of the mics listed above?

I would love to hear the AKG D112 and the EV 868 compared. Those are the two I am leaning towards.
