I have a MXL Micmate pro, however, the audio from the line-out straight to the line-in on my xonar-DG sounds better than the USB out on the micmate pro.

There's mainly far less noise, but is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

Do yourself a favor and sell it, get a 'real' asio usb interface. Here's a starter guide.

The audio converter chips in these and in usb mics is inferior to start out with.
They are made for podcasters or remote recording where nothing else is available.

I have to say, if a 3.5 inch jack plugged into a xonar gamers card sounds better than the USB, then some is wrong either with your setup or the Micmate.

Xonar cards are for gaming or watching movies; they're notoriously bad for recording.

Frankly, I agree that a proper interface with ASIO drivers is what you should be aiming for.

I think the issue had to do noise from other devices plugged into my front panel USB slots, it sounds fine now.

The reason I used the micmate is I use this for recording audio while recording video often, and the micmate can get all the power it needs from a laptop and is much smaller. I'm just looking for decent quality recordings that can be used in videos, a better interface I wouldn't think would make much of an impact anyway due to the areas where I'm recording aren't being treated.
