Is a 2nd hard drive really that important or can I do just as well with one really big 7200 rpm hard drive?

The advantage when a second physical drive is used is that you can put them on seperade IDE channels and use a seperate data stream that would be dedicated to that drive.
It is advantageous to partition one drive into 2 partitions if thats all you have to work with.

Are you using Microsoft Windows?
If so, I would definintely recommend a second HD. My experience shows that Windows is much more stable running on a special harddisk. You can also just format the Windows HD, if it's getting out of hand, without endangering your audio data. Another good reason could be to use a new harddrive for audio, everytime the other one's full. Harddisk aren't that expensive these days, so regard it simply as a data storage.

Icarus, what do you call really big and how many tracks do you plan on working with and will you be recording 16 bit, 20 bit, or 24 bit ?

The drawbacks I've encountered seem to pop up when using tools that like to create large backup files (i.e. a backup of a track being modified). When this happens the disk starts thrashing back and forth between the backup file and the audio file. You may or may not encounter these problems depending on what tools you use, how you use them, and how you set them up. If you are having problems, then partitioning is likely to just make things worse since it only gaurentees that the files won't be anywhere near each other. So in that case, your best bet is to install a second hard drive and have the tools keep temprary files on a different disk from working files.
