Hello forum,

I'm pretty excited: I'm close to finishing this 5 song EP for some friends. We recorded using my gear, I mixed the whole thing, and I plan to take a crack at mastering-- this is my first "real" project. It's been a great learning experience and thanks to all your helpful insight and skill on this site, it's turning out pretty sweet. Feel free to reminisce about your first project...ahh the first time...

Anyways, two things: I haven't found a SIR impulse I like for the entire mix. Most of what I have brightens up the acoustic space too much; I am looking for something dark and moody. It also must be a very small to medium space, not intrusive. If you know where it's at, please post a link. The style is melodic to hard rock.

Secondly, I have done this project for my friends as a favor, but in the slim to none chance the project actually goes somewhere (sales), what would be a fair producer's / engineer's percentage to ask of CD and mp3 sales. I have put in the majority of the time, but it's their baby. No labels and no advance here. We're all in the same boat: broke : )

I'll post a link once they have a site up so you can have a listen.
Peace, Chad

Maybe I'm not following, but you're looking to run the entire mix through a room 'verb impulse? Why?

Hey Drew,

Sorry I wasn't clear: I am looking for a SIR impulse that will work work well for mastering a really dry mix. Since the style is hard rock, I don't want it too wet, just open up the space a tiny bit. I have a lot of impulses, but all the ones I've found tend to be on the bright side and too wet. Just wanted to see if someone had found something "dark" or whatever term you prefer.

BTW I read small producers get 1-2% medium get 3-4% and big producers get 5-6% of CD sales, but maybe someone who knows for sure can verify.

If the mix is too dry, then shouldn't you be remixing, rather than looking to slap a 'verb on the whole thing while mastering?

I don't know the names of the SIR impulses, I used to use SIR, but have changed to simpler non-impulse stuff. But I'd first look for something called something along the lines of "warm space" or "medium room".

Then, set the decay fairly fast and turn down the wet/dry % mix on the effect to taste. An alternative is to make a copy of the final mix, verb it fully wet, and then mix the wet version with the 100% dry version to taste.

And as far as producer's rate, if I were you I'd charge well for my hourly time in the studio, because the chances of you making enough to buy a combo meal at McDonalds based upon a percentage of CD sales are slim.

SouthSide Glen-- thanks for the great ideas-- I will try both. In the future, I will definitely charge by the hour, but since I'm not established, I did this more as a favor for friends and for the experience.

Certainly, I just thought I would try to see if I could get away with a master reverb first.
