I New to 24bit/44-96k recording and had a ?. If cd quality is 16bit/44k what happens to the bits of information when you have to convert it back to 16bit/44k cd quality ? Is some of the warmth lossed and quality?

The short answer is yes.

There has been quite a bit written about this subject. The bottom line is that you do your initial recording, mixing, and mastering in 24 bit depth and higher sampling rates because of the greater precision & detail that this allows. Then as your very LAST step you make a 16/44 mixdown which is what would go on a CD.
