How does everyone use the 2496? I don't know its exact connections, but I see RCA connectors. RCA connectors wouldn't do anything good for me; it doesn't seem practical to convert everything from the mixer to RCA plugs. Does it have two XLR inputs that everyone plugs into from their mixers? That's kind of what it looks like.

I was looking for an all-in-one system, but now I'm being steered back to the mixer/simpler interface route. Any help on this process would be appreciated. I've got some pretty good ideas about what I want and what I need but I've never gotten any outside input from anyone.

Thanks everyone!

I'm assuming you mean an Audiophile 2496...

I used to own one and basically treated it like tape in and out connected to the similarly named connectors on my old Behringer mixer which were also RCA, since it was one of the cheapies...

It doesn't have XLR connections, what you're seeing are the MIDI connections.

Get some XLR to RCA adapters.

If you really want balanced inputs, get the Echo Audio MiaMIDI.

don't need 'em

I don't need the balanced inputs, but I would rather go from the mixer and not have to bother changing into another type of plug. It seems like kind of a haphazard way of going about it. Wouldn't having the RCA jacks mean it was aimed towards digital sound from DVD's and the like?

Thanks for the help!

P.S. What would you recommend for a cheap mixer $100-$250...a Mackie maybe?

No.
Compared to jacks and XLR connectors, RCA is just a costsaving way which also uses a lot less space on the soundcard to connect analog signals.
It has nothing to do with 'digital sound' whatever you mean by that.

Better get used to going from one connector type to the other. You're bound to run into it more.

Radio Shack is your friend!
(well at least for cheap audio adapters) :)

...

if you dont want to buy adapters, just get a 6 foot 1/4 inch (male/male) to RCA cable, its the best way to go.

Yes, get Mackie... tought it's not actualy "cheap", it's the best on the market for small class mixer (1202, 1402, etc...). It's preamp on VLZ series worth the price!

I think as cheap mixers in the 100-200 dollar range go, the Yamaha MGs are quite good. Very good sounding preamps...
