2488 neo noise

Does anyone else get a click noise at the start and stop point of a copy paste? It comes out in the recordings and is really annoying. I also hear the same click noise when I hit the stop button during playback.
 
That shouldn't happen unless you cut parts where there's a signal. If you cut and paste your parts where there is no level (zero crossing) that shouldn't happen. If you're doing it right and still have that problem, then there's something weird going on with your machine.
 
Is there a setting in the 2488 for crossfade? What I mean here by crossfade is that when you cut where there is signal instead of getting a sharp cut with sharp edges, the crossfade setting rounds the edges slightly and overlaps it and this does not cause a click. If you zoom right in you can see it in the edited waveform.

Unfortunately, no cross-fade.
 
I did a test. I hit one guitar string and let it sustain. Did the same on another track. Took a piece from one track and pasted it into the other track at same time location. Click is at beginning and end of paste. Does this sound normal? If it is, how are you supposed to repair a bad note? Even if you paste in quietest location of a lead for example, there will still be some sound signal.
 
Yes, that's normal. It's impossible for both notes to decay exactly the same. You can't just paste a part in the middle of a sustain and not expect it to click. This isn't a drawback of the 2488, pretty much any machine or software will give you the same results. If you want to repair a note, you either have to hope there's some silence before and after it...or, punch in and out somewhere where there's silence before and after the part you want to correct. So you might have to play more than just the actual part you want to fix.
 
I would expect a change in sound, not a click noise from the recorder that was not there to begin with. My old Roland VS880 never did that. So it sounds like there is nothing wrong with my recorder and they all do that? I did notice that you do not get the click at start and stop of recording, just editing.
 
Well, without hearing it, I can't say for sure. If you say you ALWAYS get a click and didn't get it with the Roland, then maybe there is something wrong with your machine, it's hard to say. You're right, it's not normal for it to always "pop" on an edit unless the edit is made where there's quite a bit of volume.
 
Just back to my crossfade thing, if you can zoom in and slightly crossfade the ends of the edit manually, this will prevent the click you can hear. The crossfade can be very short and you actually wont hear it crossfade, it prevent the click by eliminating the sudden break in the audio which is whats causing the click. I do a similar thing when editing audio in vegas to prevent clicks. My Tascam MX2424 has a setting for this to happen automatically, it rounds the ends of the edits and has a small crossfade where you join 2 edits together.

How would I crossfade with the neo? You mean like a split second fade and overlap at the edit ends? Or more like a split second silence space in between?

I don't own a Neo, but what you want is a split second fade with the overlap and no gap in between.

But can you fade in and out? If you can't crossfade even doing a very quick fade out and in at the edit may fix the click.

Well I just read the 2488 neo manual and I can see the problem with the cross fade, I thought that a simple fade edit would be possible but no.

The crossfade thing I am talking about is usually set up in software to prevent clicks, when you do an edit on say my MX2424, then zoom in on the edit, there is a very very quick fade produced. This also happens in most of the computer software I use, this fade prevents clicks. I would think that the neo would have this happening so I have to agree with Rami and say there may be a fault with your machine. Is there a way to back everything up on an external drive and reformat your drive, you could have a very fragmented drive on the 2488 that may be causing problems.

Hehe...No fade option. Can't cross-fade, fade to black, fade away, fade deep right, or Fade Unnaway.

The only thing you can do is Not Fade Away.

Not fragmented, just got it a month ago. Tried a quick experiment. I left about .004 second gap silence at the beginning of the track to be pasted and that seemed to get rid of the click. Any less and click was still there. The end point was trickier. I got it quieter but not gone.
If someone could check real quick, put headphones on and during playback of something not too loud, hit the stop button and see if you hear a click. If you don't then I would say my recorder is jacked.
