If i import a 16 bit audio file the export it to mixdown in 24 bit does it convert to 24??

I tried this and the file was unreadable (windows looks for an appropriate codec)

Are you saying that Cubase is making a 24 bit file that windows media player can't read?

I think this is correct. I do not think that the Windows Media Player can play back 24 bit files. Try using the auto-play option in the Cubase import dialog to sample the file to see if it is corrupted.

Transferring a 16-bit data stream into Cubase set at 24-bit WILL give you 24-bit data, but the left-most bits will be zero'd - so you don't gain any resolution doing this.

You might as well stay at 16-bit in this case (then you'll still be able to play back your files in Media player).

do you care about playing them under windows media? if not keep the files the way they are, and just use wavelab,musicmatch,ect....
