$200 to spend$

Im looking for sum new gear to beef my chain up,
Only have $$175-200 I do need monitors but im waiting for a little more money for that unless theres some in my price range you reccomend..

M-Audio mobile pre
Mxl 990
Sony mdr nc6
P4 2.8 1gb ram 100 gb and 80 gb hdd
Reason 3, fl 6 , soundforge 4, aa 2.1, ozone

I have a jvc boombox that I been using for monitoring since they cover the low range better then my 2.1 setup....

Any suggestions???

Uhmmm. My SP C-1 would be a good add to your collection. It's a HUGE step up from the Mxl, IMO.

I'm assuming all that software is stolen, considering you have a rediculous amount of it, so I'd suggest buying a real copy of one.

Lastly, maybe consider buying a good dynamic mic, such as an Se609 or an SM57? Can't have enough SM-57's...
 
put the money towards a new interface that will give you some realll dynamic range that you can use with future mics
 
If you want to make a real difference then I would save a little more. $200 won't get you far. Unless your setup was already great and you just wanted to add a new mic, or pre, or whatever.

Before upgrading you should consider what you don't like about the current sound you're getting.

That will help narrow it down to what you need most...be it room treatment, a new mic, pre, or whatever.

If I had stolen software I woulndt be recording in cool edit..

I had fl passed down to me with a sr16 and didnt like it so I went with reason it was either that or a mpc wich I coulndt afford.

I have a bunch of limited programs that came with hardware, and nothing realy expensive like waves.

I want monitors the most but whenever I go looking at them I cant find anything under $400 that I like.

I can get a cheap mixer but its kind of pointless, thought of getting a different mic but not a dynamic. Wouldnt getting a dynamic be taking a step backwards?

I thought of upgradeing the pre but I couldnt do too much better with my budget, I might be able to sell my pre when my brother gets out he was using a 4track wich is pretty much useless now especialy since the mixer died.

Buying a pre probably be a waste. As for the dynamic.. well you used dynamics for recording a lot of stuff (drums, electric guitar, electric bass). You'll always use dynamic mics for some reason or another, although I'd HIGHLY recommend getting at least a couple condensors. I'd say get a few, find out what kind of sound you're really going towards, plus it's a good way to get your ears a little more used to how condensors work and the different sounds and colorings they have on voices and guitars. Honestly, I'd suggest getting some kind of condensor or saving your money for something bigger. Either one.
 
should I look at studio projects?. I kinda thought my mic was my weakest link..

Just for info I dont record anything besides vocals,

In that case you definitely should get a new condensor mic. That's the best kind of mic for recording vocal tracks. Unless you want to get into ribbon mics, but that's a whole different world of mics. The SP C-1 is a great mic for vocals, if you listen to the clips at my link in my sig, those were all done with the SP C-1. Great mic, has a good coloring, I highly recommend it. If you like it, let me know, I'm getting rid of it so I can have some cash for a new preamp.
 
I'd say you should shoot for a better mic AND a better preamp. I haven't heard a lot of good things about your mic in terms of vocal work, though a few here like them (I've never used one).

But I have used an MXL V67, which works great for some voices. It has a body that some find nice, though others say can be muddy. I liked it when I owned it.

You could also try a Studio Projects B1, which is a bit cleaner/less colored/less hyped than the C1. I used to own both; I kept the B1.

Finally I'd look into a used Audio-Technica AT 3035 or 2020. I haven't used either but I have heard good things about them and I really like my 4047.

As for the pre, I've heard nothing good about the mobilepre. I mean, I'm an M-Audio fan and use a Delta 66 with DMP-2 pres in my Omni mixer... but by all accounts the Mobilepre is a flop.

If I were you, I'd look at a Studio Projects VTB-1, which can be had used for under $100, or a used M-Audio DMP-3, which I believe go for around $125 used. Or, if you want more variety in the sound, the new Joemeek ThreeQ can be found used for under $175 or so...

I'll second the vtb-1, I just sold one like, yesterday, it was a great pre, I used it for the vocals of those tracks too. Great little pre for the price.
 
Fuck the new recording equipment. Spend the money on a spelling tutor. Your posts are pretty hard to read.

You can't really tell how your work sounds if you don't have reasonable monitoring.

The 990 is a very hyped-high frequency mic. If you want a more natural sound, spend $19 on an MSH1-0, then save the rest towards monitors.

Dynamics rock. I used to think what you think, but guys here and at other boards kept recommending old dynamics.

I would suggest a Sennheiser 421 used in that price range.
 
save another hundred and get some M-audio Bx5a's. amazing speakers.
 
Here's my advice to you

Buy that DMP3 Mic PreAmp in the mall section here and then search out a used Studio Projects B1 or get a new M-Audio Nova. That will be the best bang for the buck for $200.

Doubt you'll find that mic under $200 man. I know, I've looked.

I second that. I'm very happy with my AKG Perception 200 (a typical low-end, chinese made, large diaphram condensor) for vocals and guitar. The difference in sound is like taking cotton out of your ears when compared to a dynamic.
