Asus p4p800 se

just installed windows xp on what is going to be my DAW...problems abound

the 200gig SATA that I installed XP on is reading as 127gig capacity...what would cause this?

I'm crashing right and left which I think is a driver issue with my All-in-wonder video card...have a new driver which I will try to install

I plan to get another drive to install the OS on, but don't currently have one...thinking about ditching XP also

help me please

if you had have searched under my name awhile back as i suggested you would have seen i posted not to use these huge hard drivers.
whatever possesed you to think you need this much space ?
a small drive for windows and a 8mb 120mb cache drive for tracks is more than enough.
i use 80mb. and running 24 track to 32 track songs. this is way more than enough. running huge hard drives results in other problems.
peace and please read and inform yourself.

Well, it looks like he's got a little more foresight than Bill Gates did. Instead of critisizing him for using that drive (which is just fine, by the way), why don't you try helping him with his problem?

I would try to help, but I have absolutely no experience with SATA drives.

sile. as you can see from the time ive been on this bbs ive helped loads of people on here.
i dont think thats a fair comment.
but i get really annoyed when people bypass sage prudent advice.
then expect a miracle cure.
its like a friend of mine every two years he asks me for the best
new pc configuration; knows nothing about the pc but his ego takes over
and always thinks he knows better. then expects me to come on over to his place and fix up his mistakes. people like my friend think the pc is just like a sega or nintendo.....it isnt.

sile. i forgot to mention another reason i dont like one huge drive.
when one has sooo much data on such a drive and it dies on you ,
you are down bad. youve lost everything. much better to multiple drives so you can cross backup betweeen them.
also ever try backing up a 200g drive ?
try it sometime and you might come around to my way of thinking.

Partition Magic, or, if using WinXP Pro, Start>Control Panel>Administrative >Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management(Local)

Yeah that's pretty much over-kill for a boot drive, but partitioning it to two 100 gig partitions may help.
It's possible that your BIOS doesn't support drives of that capacity (check with ASUS). Also make sure you have updated XP to SP1 and any other pertinent updates. I wouldn't bother with SP2 at this point (don't see it as any benefit to DAW use).

What I would do .... get a smaller drive for XP and all your programs and stuff, then partition that 200 Gig'er and use it for audio data and other file storage purposes.

You can easily cure this problem with a new controller card.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=15-150-018&depa=0

A lot of motherboards have the standard cheapo hard drive controllers built in which have a drive capacity limit of 137GB. The only way to make the computer "see" a larger drive is to upgrade the control circuit board that makes the drive work. This is simple to do. It plugs right into a slot on your existing motherboard. Then follow the instructions that come with the new card to get it working.

Good luck.

I don't like the idea of having disk traffic clogging the pci bus in a DAW.

Better to partition it like suggested above. Also use NTFS, not FAT32

though I didn't do a search for your name, I did try to search for the particular problem I was having...tried a few different strings, and kept getting "word is either too short, or too common" in the the search results, or got threads which didn't answer the problem...sorry I don't know what I'm doing, but It was my thinking that this is what the newbie section is all about...

I'm doing this all on my own, and it's not easy, I don't have anybody I can go to and/or call to show me...so I do what I can to find it where I can...it's called grinding...

my intent was not to use the 200gig as a boot drive, but circumstances being what they were ($) I was going to use it til I could get the smaller drive to use as the boot drive which was my original plan...

why use 200gig? b/c I can? why get a smaller drive when there are plenty of bigger ones around? I want to be sure I have enough space...sile put it pretty good...though they might not work, the tech know how will catch up to that

thanx for the help, but I think I found the answer to this probelm on another board...haven't been able to try it yet, but I will post the results

You think your friend has an ego?

And is telling EVERYONE to search under your name the best solution? You might want to look inside yourself. I certainly don't think that my options are the BEST opinions around here, and am failing to understand how searching under your name is going to provide everyone with the solution they need. I'd be telling them to search for their issue - which I do tell them to do if I can't answer.

Bittch Beeter: hope you can find a solution. Please do post what you hear in the other forum! Why ditch XP though?

I remember reading on another site, that if you update windows(either SP1 or 2) , it will solve this problem.

I don't have a problem with Manning1 feeling like he's got the answer, my whole thing is that he's all like "You don't know what the f*ck you doing", and I'm all like "ummmmm, duh."...lol

I don't take internet chatroom/forum banter too seriously... ...that's letting you pocket protector show...lol

lol .... He better be careful or sooner or later, when someone searches under his name ..... all they will find is a bunch of posts saying to search under his name.  :D

Certainly not out of the realm of possibility. :)

What did you come up with on the other forum? I do rememeber reading myself about a service pack for Windows XP addressing the larger drive issue. I personally use 2-120 gig drives. I guess it could be argued that these are too big, but I feel they are not. I find myself using quite a bit of the available space on them these days. One for da OS and progs, the other for da audio files - and wham, bam, I'm a happy camper. I'm not a puter engineer, but somehow I managed to build me a good 'ol puter for music recording.

200G Harddrive showing only 127G problem

hi
I had the same problem with a same size HD.
Here's what I did -
I downloaded the SP1 (service pack) from Microsoft -
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/express.mspx
go to that link and scroll down a bit until you see the download link - "Windows XP SP1a"
*you might already have SP1 on your PC.

But it was still showing only 127G after I installed Win
XP SP1, so I realized that I must defragment it, which sucked because I already had data on that drive (copied it to my main HD - 40G)

So here's what I had to do :
Right Click on desktop's My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Defragmenter. On the top right side of the Computer Management window is the HD selection.
Under that is where it should show 127G active, and the rest inactive. You need to defragment the entire drive and then set it up so that the entire capacity is active (I'm sure you'll figure it out). It adds up to about 186G (I think). And that's as good as it gets...

peace.

Yes you have helped loads of people on this board. That's cool.

Yes, it is a perfectly fair comment. When someone tells you what they've got to work with, sure it's fine to let them know that it may not be optimal, but go ahead and let them know how to do the best with what they've got.

I know all about losing data. Try losing the contents of a 1 terrabyte RAID 0 stripe because some idiot tried to reconfigure one of the drives before we upgraded it to RAID 0+1. I know the risks. My server here at home has a software RAID 0 stripe across 3 different drives from different manufacturers. It's been running strong for over 3 years. Backing up a 200g drive is nothing! I do that on each of our 6 servers (with 4x250g drives each) every day. Part of life. No big deal.

I don't take issue with you wanting to help people...but please actually HELP them! Don't tell them they've got the wrong stuff and just leave them there. Don't tell them to search through your 1,000+ past posts to find an answer that most likely doesn't deal specifically with their problem. Just give them the damn answer! It's gotten to the point where most of the time I don't even bother looking at what you've posted on a thread, because I know it's the same old broken record player going around and around. "Search under my name for the answer." Over and over again.

sile.
people have to show a little initiative for themselves.
as to the search business .....i was asked to do that by some members on this board. just read the back posts and the attacks . so to keep peace i did it.
if i post my true feelings on a subject i get attacked to tell newbies to use search. then when i tell newbies to use search - i get attacked.
i dont want to get into bbs war games so this thread is on my ignore list.
peace.
