$20 check to anyone who helps me - delta 1010, plus

okay here is the setup - I am experienced but bought all new equipment

Rode mic into phantom power (at-cp8506) via XLR - XLR out of phantom to TRS 1/4 into jack 1 of Delta 1010 - On PC, I see response in meters when I speak into mic - but computer will not recognize it when testing

Using Sonar 4.0 I am able to record, but it is really low in volume (-48 db at peak) - and when I normalize I get lots of noise

I have a Santa Cruz that I am trying to continue to use for output - but maybe that is the problem? I like that it has stereo outs versus the 1010 - but if I can find the right adapters I will use the 1010 output, even though it is TRS mono for each jack which I have to somehow get into a 1/8" headphone male

use the 10/10 outs....
use 1 &2 out...
disable the Santa Cruz...you are probably having a BIOS conflict there anyways....
Check your device manager..I'll bet there is a driver conflict...


do you have a board with phantom power or just the cp8506?
It just seems easier foir me to run into a board and then use the outs for each channel into the 10/10....that's how I do it anyways....
 
Is the phantom power box a preamp? Isn't the delta 1010 line in?

The 10/10 has Pre's built in....
he really doesn't need the P-box...
The 10/10 in's are 1/4" balanced...
 
if you had a small mixer...
You could run the mic into the pre on the mixer and then channel out to the 10/10 then run the 10/10 back into the mixer and mionitor on the phone jack...
A small mixer will cost you like $40.00....
and when the time comes...you could use the same set up and run the main outs of your mixer to monitors....

I just looked at the back of mine and it's -4 or + 10 ...not phantom

one other option...a cheap one...
is to use the 10/10 outs 1 & 2 and use a Y 1/4" adaptor out to a phone jack....
It should work....
and it's a cheap solution....
you need to set levels in the Delta control panel...
under patchbay router....select monitor mixer....for H/W out 1 & 2


I really like using my mixer to monitor though......just a thought...

the 1010lt has to nasty pre's..the full 1010 with breakout box and the convertors in there doesn't.

Disable the santacruze and set up your monitors through a pair of outputs on the 1010 1/2-7/8 your choice.

Record at 24 bit in your software and you can go in at 44.1KHz and have no fear of losing any quality in recording unless you want to trebble your expendature on a sound card. The 1010 is a good card, just make sure you have your routing correct and your gain structure sorted out.

Then he is running a __1/4"__ into a delta 1010 which indicates to me its the full 1010 not the 1010lt since the lt version has XLR's on the first two inputs and RCA's on the other 6, and as we all know the 1010 with the rack mount box doesn't have pre's, he is gonna need a pre. And that is why he is only hitting -48dB (I am surprised its that high). I take paypal :D .

Having two sound cards is not the problem, or even A problem. If the software sees the inputs/outputs its going to work just fine. Although I would use the 1010's outs for quality reasons, but the difference will not be night and day. SHAMELESS PLUG COMING: BTW, I have some 1/8" stereo to 1/4" TS cables in the forsale section.

then he needs a mic pre to bring the signal up to line level before it hits the 1010

whatever the best solution turns out to be, I will let you know and get $20 to whomever gave me the details

I think I will remove the Santa Cruz and use the 1010 outs (although the adapters are going to be tough to find)

it sounds like I need a preamp for the Mics ? I suppose it has to be a good one or I will introduce noise?
 
Preamps range in price big time. How much do you have to spend on one?

An FMR RNP, M-Audio DMP3, Groove Tubes Brick, Studio Projects VTB-1 are all good starter preamps. They range in price from $450 to $90. The RNP and the DMP3 are two channel preamps.
 
Something like an M-Audio DMP3 will get you good results on a budget
