ive got two sings off of a recently completed album that i would appreciate your feedback on
they were recorded with various (under $100) mics - through an alesis studio 24 mixer into a layla 24/96 into cubase sx2... all small studio mixed and mastered..
even though the album is complete i would appreciate feedback to help me improve my techniques

thanks

The eq could be tweaked on the mid-high range of the guitar in the first song (of those two). Listen for the excess howl the guitar is putting out which is extending out of the boundaries of the range we all commonly listen to music in. It's just for the sake of more clarity. What I'm talking about isn't a make-or-break vital thing. Just a tweak.

so are you saying raise the e.q. in the mid high? ive got it bumped up currently to 6.8 at 9087hz with a .2 (wide) q ... i was trying to add some defination with that.... do you think thats not enough? or was it too much,
plus thanks for listening and the feedback

I was thinking to lower that range... only on guitar though. My interpretation of this range is that it is trade off or compromise where you balance between definition loss/gain and that extra howl. Listeners usually don't point it out or consciously notice it because it's outside of our usual attention range, but all the midrange howl you can eliminate without losing definition sure makes it nicer to listen to.

this was fun listening to :)
reminds me of good ole' GBH and Discharge.

i would have liked to hear the songs with a higher bitrate, 192 maybe, but: A "bigger" or broader stereo impression would probably heighten the impact, now i got a bit of a mono recording feel. And on the first track, i would have liked the drums louder in the mix..... what compression/reverb did you use on the mix, if any?

i think the guitar sound is fine, just a touch loud :D

...

the problem is that somehow you made a 128kbps mp3 sound like its a 56kbps mp3. everything just sounds like a mess, its impossible to give a good review

I don't agree that it's a mess because the vocals being as dry as they are is a style option that is definitely acceptable in this genre, and it's all there crystal clear just like the complete body of the snare. The dryness is one of the things that makes it realistic to clearly record and mix this genre.

Madmush:
effects used:
c1 comp on most tracks
Rcomp and PSP vintage warmer on bass (he used a fuzz when recorded which we will never do again)
slight sonic maximizer on master
and PSP vw on master

thanks for the GBH/discharge reference our singer will be glad to hear that

the guitar sounds loud on my monitors too, but i had to split the difference, when i listened to other systems the guitar was TOO quiet - this was my first mix on these monitors too, so im still getting used to them

trey:sorry for the low mp3 format but im dialup and hate massive mp3's, maybe ill put some hi-fi versions next to em..

they were encoded in wavelab=stereo 44.1khz Lameenc 128kbps, do you think frauhoffer 40kbps promp3 would sound better, they seem to be my only current choices

thanks for the replies
