Everything you just stated can be done w/ a sampler like the s2000 and sequencing software. Take cubase the producer pack for example. Every thing you can do with an MPC you can do faster with cubase producer pack which will give you a sequencer, a multi track recorder, and a wave editor(and editing waves in a wave editor smokes any hardware wave editor I've ever seen). There are better set ups for less money then an MPC in my opinion.

Computer software

Yes you are right(except for those nice drum pad`s the MPC has)you can basicaly do all that with some software.I DON`T!Reason why?Computers fuck up!My audio gear doesn`t (at least it hasn`t yet)in essence most audio gear is a computer just in a more concentrated form. But they do what I tell it to and I don`t have any of the problems that I have with a computer.Yeah Yeah I know you can do so much more with computers and all the big boys use them, but for one I don`t like em!And for 2 I feel like I did something when I create songs using the gear I have.Let me explain:Alesis RA-100 amp with monitor ones,Mackie 1402vlz,T.C.electronics finalizer plus,Lexicon mpx100 for (BASIC effects)Korg Triton,E-mu SP-1200,2 turntables,Fostex FD-4 Fostex CR300 cd burner..........this is what I work with oh and of coarse my presonis MP-20 pre amp with sm-57 and beta sm-57.I do Hip-Hop music and that`s it.When I create something in my studio with this gear I feel like I did something and it feels good, and I`ve been told by George Massenberg that my shit sounds great so guess what? That`s good enough for me!I don`t need a computer and don`t want one!Actualy I got one that I use to look at some porn, but besides that it could be a coffee cup holder for all I care. You see I`m from the old school, back in 87 I started with two turntables and an old sp-12........and I used to rock some Brooklyn house party`s......computers wasn`t in my vocabulary and I try to keep them out of it now,so when you say computer software can do all that then good for computer software but that doesn`t have anything to do with me.Ask me and I`ll tell you with no additives or perservatives!

The MPC sequencer is pattern based and specially designed for working with beats. The MPC is basically a sampling drummachine.

PC sequencing software is all piano-roll type sequencers, and more general in their designs.

Therefore, doing what you do with an MPC is easier to do with the MPC than with for example Cubase.

hello cbas,
Im sorry to hear yolu bought the kurz station without sampling. A better choice may have been a k2500 WITH sampling....

Now you have to make up for this, you have to go out right now and get an akai s5000. This is THE sampler, costs about $1,200 sampling wise WAY better than the mpc's or anything else. Get it. It has a huge lcd screen its VERY easy to use. This will open up the world of sample based music to you in absolutely stellar fashion. Or else get something like the korg triton or yamaha motif. The mpc too is great for its sequencer, but with a great sampler like the s5000 or more complete workstation the world is your, just rustle up a copy of logic audio also if you get the s5000 get a synth module or two with it.

VSTi's

Here's an Idea. Just get Kontakt and or Battery for drums, some sample cds. You don't need the hardware sampler if you have a decent DAW and spend some time sifting through posts here to learn how to make the most if it.
