I originally wanted to send Ethan Winer an e-mail through here, but I noticed that didn't fly :D

Anyway I don't care who comes up with an anwser, I just hope SOMEBODY can help me :)

Ok so here's the deal. As some of you might have read, I have 2 rooms, and 1 doesn't have a door. This means all that seperates my bedroom and studioroom in that place, is air.

-Now, my 1st question is: without a door... as what does the bedroom act like? A basstrap? A broadband trap? What?!

2nd question: I have a fireplace that isn't being used. The hollow part is about 2,5 feet wide, 1,5 feet high, and 2 feet deep.

-My idea is to stuff the damn thing with rockwool or something like that, put some cloth in front of it, and use it as a bass trap. Will this work?

Any (helpful :D ) anwsers would be highly appreciated
Thanks :)

I think the bedroom will act as a mega bass trap if you fill the door gap with material-covered rockwool/703/rigid fiberglass when not in use. But that's just my theory. Hope you get an answer from someone more educated/experienced than me on the subject

IF you leave the fireplace open, it will act like a resonant chamber at around 200-300 hZ, and "color" the room sound (by adding extra resonances at those frequencies) so filling it with rockwool is a good plan.

If you were to place thick rockwool (like 6" or more) in place of your non-existent "door" between rooms, then you should indeed get a giant bass trap effect; with a 12 foot deep room behind the rockwool, it would peak in absorption at around 23 hZ; but it would also absorb below that, and pretty much everything ABOVE that as well. IOW, it would act about the same as having a large, open window there that everything can pass through, never to be heard again. (this would not be a bad thing)

NOT putting rockwool across the door would likely give you a false bass boost in the control room, probably causing you to make bass-shy mixes... Steve

BTW, if this doorway were in a CORNER of your control room, it would be even MORE effective since all modes peak in corners.

Man, my "honey do's" are so outa hand I'm now writing the list on a roll of toilet paper; works pretty well, ya just stick one end in the crapper and flush a few times, pretty soon the whole list is "done" :=))

Gotcher PM, back atcha (and thanks, just in case I forgot) Steve
