I recently bought the Omnistudio and hooked it up to my Dell 2.8 GHz P4 with 512MB ram and 80 GB HD to make simple recordings of guitar and vocals. The drivers have been updated from the m-audio website and I've set all the settings per the manuals and posts I've read throughout this BBS. Cool Edit 2000 and n-track are installed. Here are my questions/problems:

1) When in recording mode, I cannot hear Mic 1 or 2 through the monitors or headphones (and yes, the aux buttons in the back are depressed). When I playback the recording, I hear the Mic 1 recording but not Mic 2's.

2) When I open up "Sound and Audio Devices" in the control panel the M-audio Device volume is "grayed-out" and the volume lever is set all the way to the left (low)--the lever is unmovable. Is this the way it's suppose to be?

I have a few other questions, but these are my main problems. Appreciate any help.

Question 1 - Why do you have the Aux buttons pressed in. Are you using a midi device. If your just recording using the mic/instr inputs 1 & 2, then unpress them. When they're pressed in the Omni's stereo buss is muted. That might be your problem.

Question 2 - I sure hope it's normal. Mine is the same way.:p

Thanks for your reply.

The auxillary buttons are actually unpressed (I read the dozen or so posts on this issue). I'm still going nuts trying to get sound through the monitors/headphones during recording....

Any thoughts?

You should be using the M-Audio Control Panel, not the windows one. In there you can select 'Monitor Mix' and adjust your monitor and playback levels

I tried all combinations in the M-Audio Control panel and still no go...that is, no sound through the monitors or headphones during recording. I can only hear the recording during playback.

Suggestions? Appreciate everyone's input.

Assuming you've set up everything correctly, I've noticed that each time I start a recording session I need to open up the Monitor Mixer Page and load my saved settings before I can hear through my headphones. It seems like a nasty little quirk in the Delta software.

If that does'nt help then try to monitor your recording signal through your recording software. I've actually tried it both ways, but just don't try to use your monitors while recording. Feeeeeeeeeedbaaaaaaaack! Ouch!

Toonsmith,
May I ask what your Monitor Mixing Page settings are?

Sure!:p They're exactly the same as in the manual.

The Monitor Mixer Page - on the master volume, Wavout 1/2 , and H/W 1/2 the faders are slid up 0.0 and unmuted.

The Patchbay/Router Page - H/W out 1/2 is set to monitor mixer and H/W 3/4 is set to Wavout 3/4.

The Hardware Page I never go there but I keep the variable signal leveels at -4 dBu and 44,100 sample rate.

This is the setting that I've saved to load whenever I start my recordings.

Thanks Toonsmith! I somehow managed to overlook the setting for H/W 1/2, whose faders were down. That problem is no longer!

However, I'm still not able to record through Mic 2. I'm using n-track and cool edit...is there something I need to configure in order to be able to record through mic 2?

Again, appreciate your help!

I figured out the problem...I was recording in Mono, which only picks up input 1.... Stereo mode picks up inputs 1 and 2. Duh...
