Hey everybody. Well, its been a while since I posted anything new. So here are 2 new tracks that are probably the best stuff I've done to date.

The first one 'Watch Me Wane' is probably my most professional sounding mix ever - at least thats what my friends tell me.

The second one 'Reprise' is my favorite as far as the songwriting/lyrics go.

They are both at Castrato .

Thanks for listening and blast away!

Hey gnarled,

I checked out Watch Me Wane. Very cool tune. Retroish, 70's ish , the type of stuff I can really dig. I like the guitar sounds, tuned low but still clear enough.

My only complaints would be aspects of the drums. The guitars tend to drown them out. I like the overheads, but the snare (especially) and kick are too quiet IMO.

Like the change at 00:47. How about a higher harmony there on certain lines? "I ------------ only loved you..." It's doubled which is cool (there are some minor pitch issues here & there, you go a bit flat on some of the held notes, mainly the second double eg. 'that's enough'), but I think a few harmony tracks would reinforce it nicely.

Nice stuff!

Thanks for the reply Emeric. I think you highlighted just about every aspect of the song that I have problems with as well. The snare drum playing was pretty inconsistent which made things difficult. I hate to squash the snare too much and didn't spend the time to automate it - I guess I probably should of. I think the kick drum mic moved before recording this track and I got a really crappy sound (all boom, no click) and had to EQ and compress the shit out of it to get it to sound decent at all. And about the vocals - I know I can't sing very well, but I'm working on it!

Gave It A Go...

I agree with Emeric's comments.

And I really dug the cut-time you were putting into it.

Since Emeric summed up my thoughts, I'll just say good tune there, and keep it up!

I really like the progressive flair of these tunes...

Watch Me Wane: This has a nice little guitar riff...I agree with VI, the 2-beat measures were a great touch. You already know about the drums.

Reprise: A very moody piece. Sounds like it is part of a larger concept album...I like the alternating vocal parts. A few intonation issues...a little flat on some notes, but overall pretty good. At 4:10, there is a short solo break, but the guitar sound you are using sounds very thin and distant, and it has distracting pulse to it. I would choose something warmer for this song, but that is just my taste.

Good tunes, keep 'em coming!:D

VI - Thanks for listening.

AC - That solo at 4:10 is actually just the same casio keyboard used for the other parts run through a rat pedal. A nice smooth guit solo would sound cool there though.

Glad you guys all liked the progressive elements of my songs. My roomate calls my stuff 'organic prog rock,' which I think is fairly suiting.

I know somebody else wants to comment on this stuff....

:D

the vocal doubling sounds wierd to my wierd. I think the lead singer once would have worked better in the verse, also , the voice is a bit too low in the mix.

I like the kick sound you got. Please turn it up a tad. The bass is also nice. The guitars sounds raw especially at the intro.

nice job

funk on!

I listened to "watch me wane"

coooooool song

please tell me this....

what mic, what eq settings, and what compression did you use for that snare. that snare is sweeeeeeeet!

That is an AT 4033 - first time I ever used it on snare. Signal chain is 4033 -> Alesis Studio 24 -> Gadget Labs 824 -> Vegas. Don't remember the EQ off hand - I'll give a look when I get home, but I usually cut a little around 600 (thats about where my snare rings at) and I boost some lows and some highs. Then I compressed it with wavehammer from Sound Forge 5.0 - I love the way this compressor sounds on kick and snare. I generally use a pretty quick attack and release with a modest ratio (4:1 or less) and knock off about 8dB max.

Thanks for listening...
