2 new mixes from Gonzo

here are 2 brand new mixes of recent songs i've posted

"Twilight rain" (mellow acoustic/elec blend, with vox and bass, no drums)

"Allan's Resolve" (full on instrumental rock, slow and spacey)

still struggling with low end issues, and mastering issues.

yes, i know it's not real mastering.........!

(here's the link to the first attempt at 'twilight rain' if you want to compare....

i've nowhere else to post the original link to the allan's resolve song...)

EXCELLENT result. I left more comments at the old thread.
It's also very nice to hear a solo that isn't massively overdriven or buried in a flurry of notes.
Congratulations.

glad to see you found it!!
LOL

the original DID have overdriven solo sounds.....
but it was still in the same flavor as this version.

the longer i play, the more i realize that boiling down my melody ideas hits more people than when i just let it fly...

it's hard to explain, but even when i decide to be aggressive and play fast, i'm always playing 'melodies', even if only in my mind.

a lot of people confuse melodies with 'riffs'.

i do that too, but mostly to come up with rhythm affairs...
solos, to me, are exactly how i hear them in my head, how i sing along with them.... (yes, even the faster ones, which give me a tongue cramp)
;)

i love rippin' guitars (gilbert, Kollman, etc) but i love spacey melodic stuff too (gilmore, peter green, etc)

sometimes it IS harder to back off, than it is to lean in.
i'm still learning.
been doing it for 30 years!

if anyone has any opinions, or insights about the drum mix (allan's resolve) i'd appreciate them.

i had phase issues with the overhead, and tried several different things to try to tame it...

'hello........
is there anybody in there........
just nod if you can hear me...
is there anyone at home?'

;)

Great!

I thought both were very good! Allan's Resolve has a very Vai-ish type sound with the guitar! I thought both sounded fine! Keep it up!

Please check out my posts, I would love to get feedback.

Thanks

thank you strat, for listening.....
will check the posts out as well..

Good stuff....very tastful, well balanced, excellent musicianship....keep it up and lets hear more!!!!

Hey Man... long time no speak. :)

I listened to both and felt the bottom end does need work. It could come down to a matter of taste, but I was thinking it needed more stuff around 40hz and perhaps a touch of low mids, around 200hz. It did seem hyped around 6khz - the cymbals and voice. That's what I hear anyway. I could have confirmed if I could have d/l'd the files as opposed to streaming.

Nice guitar work as usual. :)

hey, thanks for chiming in....

it's funny you mention the 40 hz deficit.... that's about where i rolled off the eq on mastering...
it seemed to be muddying up all the low end mix, and with my krk rokits, i don't really trust what i hear (or DON'T hear) for real low end...... so playing it safe, i rolled it off...

maybe a less aggressive eq scheme... or better yet, a simply high pass set at maybe, 35hz?
seems like i DID tweak at around 6khz as well, just on the drum submix, to get the airy sound on the overheads... obviously, i over did it.....
good ears.... thanks for the tech check..... just what i needed....

caryindy-
in other words, if i hadn't rolled off the low bass (44hz down), it would have sounded boomy and muddy in the super lows on my particular monitor system.

plus, when i a/b'd my mix against some pro recordings, they had even less low end energy in their mixes than i did.....
so, i'm kinda stuck as to go about making THAT decision, short of mixing elsewhere......

any ideas?

Hmm. Unless you have monitoring that goes down to 30hz or so, it will be hard to make adjustments down there. I do understand your situation - no mud is better than earthshaking bottom.

If you have a room that is treated acoustically, I'd be nice to get a sub. You may be able to identify the hump and put a little dip in the eq, as opposed to the high pass. You know?

If you're having the stuff mastered, perhaps they could take a prelim listen and let you know where things are funky. Just a thought.

Either way, I always enjoy your stuff. Keep rocking!

my monitoring is only good down to about 50 hz....
such is the poor man's monitoring choices....
but i do a lot of comparison listening, though i'm still guessing on the lowest low.

i don't particularly like signals sitting around 40 hz and lower, they don't seem to translate to most systems, just the most kick ass ones....
this one, i mastered, so that probably explains it fully!!
LOL
but my album, i had sent out to a pro, so i wouldn't be guessing about it, and IT does sound much better.

i may have to eventually spring for a sub....
thanks for all the great comments!
glad you enjoyed it...
