2 mic setup and sonar

hi,

I'm using 2 mics to record acoustic guitar. their hooked up to my interface and sonar is working great first time.

very basic question. How do I go about recording. Do I record 2 tracks simultaneously? and pan 1 to the left and the other to the right? or just record 1 track.

just after best practices.

thanks

For most applications, one mic is plenty for acoustic guitar. A good starting point is one cardiod mic about 12-18" away from the guitar, pointed at the the place where the neck joins the body. Too bright? Point the mic more toward the sound hole. Too boomy? Point the mic more toward the neck.

If you want to experiment with two mics, you can start with the XY method, then perhaps try ORTF. You can find diagrams/instructions using the search function on this website, or use Google:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone_practice

There are better references, these are just the first two I found.

I've experiemented with one mic pointing at the neck/body joint, and another pointed at the bridge. Keep the mics as far away from each other as possible to avoid phasing issues - the 3:1 rule applies:

I like to record acoustic , 2 mics xy pattern and put each mic on a seperate mono track. I pan each track left and right to get the stereo effect. You could use 1 stereo track, there is no hard and fast rule. I like 2 mono tracks so I can eq then slightly different. One stereo track applies eq the same on left and right.

thanks for the replies.

how do you put each mic on a separate track? because when I record on one track with 2 mics plugged in it will pick up both mics.
