By visual comparison, you would think that the AMD is slower....however, the FSB says that it is 2000Mhz. Not sure what the Pentium D runs at.

Does anyone know which processor would be considered "faster" or are they equal. Are they rated on different scales?

I have no experience with AMD...

Performance wise the x2 is fastest processer on the market. But a processer does not make up a whole computer. I have installed the D based DAW and it cooks so with either chip, you probably wont see performance issues either way. I have been burned many a time by AMD and their chipsets with compatability issues so do some serious research on whats runs well in a DAW.

I'm not sure where the 2 ghz front side bus comes from but the Pentium D 955 chipset runs at 1066 (2x533 mhz). For me personally, I value stabilty and quality over bleading edge performance at a cost so I prefer intel on intel chipsets and never have any surprises

i have an athalon 4400 x2 and it rocks. intel is a lot farther behind on chip design. amd has quad cores coming out this year and intel hasn't gotten the dual core thing down yet. not to mention amd's run cooler. there's a ton of info on this subject if you google it.

check out the Thonex and Blofield tests on the nuendo hardware forum

As an intel loyalist I have to say, its not even REMOTELY close

SO I am just finishing now my dual opteron :)

How do you figure? The Pentium D has been out since last summer, is cheaper than the X2 and dual core pentium MacBooks are shipping.

Who wants to spend $2500 on a dual core opteron chip ($2574-opteron 880 2.4ghz) ? If it was to spend more than 3 grand on a machine, I would by a quad G5

The 8xx series Opterons are designed to be used on mother boards with 4 processors, effectively allowing 8 cores to work in one computer. No G5 is gonna beat that. But I do agree, it's a whole lot of cash for just a processor. Personally, I'd go for a dual CPU setup with 2 of the faster, but single-core opterons. Price wise, that's gotta be cheaper than the top line dual-core opterons, and having 2 CPUs actually gives more power than one dual core. However, you'll need a socket 940 motherboard and ECC Registered RAM (which is more expensive).

TIP: Ebay seems to be great for Opterons systems. I bought a 1.4 ghz Opteron (comparable to the higher end 32-bit Athlon XP) for 50 dollars, and 1.5 gigs of ecc reg ram for 50 bucks also! Nobody seems to want these.

AMD X2s have a crossbar architecture that allows the two cores to share data over a private connection, making them faster than a dual-proc setup. AMD uses a different architecture to Intel, and its mainly because the AMD memory controller resides on the CPU not the motherboard. AMD does more per cycle, so its like pumping up a tire with a foot pump AMD do slow long pumps while intel do lots of shot pumps. Check out the benchmark scores. AMD always wins. Frankly i can't belive apple went with intel, but I guess the wheels have been turning on that for at least 5 years.

Well, since sooner or later, and my bet is MUCH sooner, even the few audio aps that run on mac will no longer be updated. And while were on that, I wouldnt like to give up probably 99.99999% of the stuff I use when there is no real alternative on a Mac

Oh, dont get me wrong, you are preaching to the choir. I'm not fond of macs at all (why pay for 3 year warrenty or OS upgrades?)

I would never spend that amount of money on a computer and for me macs are lacking in the features I need in the studio

AMD's also run cooler so you wont need to worry so much about noise issue's from fans, But if you were a tech head you could always go liquid cooled or peltier cooled mmm-45 lol
