If I master a track in 24bit sample rate and my sound card can only produce 16bit, is it a problem ??

what i'm asking is, if it metter if I buy a 24bit card or 16bit card for listening while mastering

thanx

If you master in 24-bit and your sound card only supports 16-bit, it means one either or both of these things -

1. Your software has already defaulted to 16 bit operation so who cares. RTFM to find out.

2. You need to dither the signal from 24-bit back to 16-bit before using in a CD-Audio format.

Ciao,

Can you also tell us what you are doing? Are you mastering on a different PC from that which you recorded on? Tell us more about the setup and we can be more specific.

I have a laptop recording machine (1824) and a big computer

I'm going to do the mastering on the laptop

and i've got two options:

1. buy 24bit usb sound card (audiophile usb) and transfer the audio direct to the laptop

2. buy an 16bit audio usb (Edirol UA-1A) and transfer the audio to my big computer first using my dio 2448, and then get the wav files to the laptop for mastering

Your VS-1824 has a 24 bit output, right? So, just burn a 24 bit wave file from your desktop computer onto a CD-R and load it into your VS-1824.

Yo Rock-A-Round-Da-Clock:

Here is a neat little thing I do. I record using the Yam 2816. It will only burn CD's in 16 bit, which I guess is standard for now.

However, I can record in 24 bit and run it out of the unit into tape; with a GOOD tape deck, the results are very good.

If I had a DAT and ran the 24 bit out into that, it might even be better. But, I haven't tried that yet as I don't own a DAT.

I do remember way back signing up to protect DAT from being banned. My, how time DATS by.

Do this. Simple and easy.

Then dither down once to 16-bit audio at thre absolute last thing you do in the mastering process.
