Haha ...nice cryptic thread title huh? :D

Ok it goes like this: when I do my thing, I record into my imac g5/protools system, submix stuff in the computer, then send it out to my mixer to sum it with my other stuff.

BUT

I've been thinking...it would be handy if I could record all of my channels into a computer, like a tape machine... to use for mixdowns, or, more importantly, to make Protools sessions for clients.

My question:

What kind of mac would it take to JUST record 16 channels of audio @ 24 bit 44.1 khz (I was thinking digi 001+extra adat converter), or play them back....like I said...like a tape recorder.

CPU? RAM? etc?

Thanks :)

no it's not. it says stuff about system requirements etc..but I want cold hard figures for my situation.

what are you talking about?
The same figures that talk about actually RUNNING a 001, are the SAME figures that talk about running it on OSX

you asked..."What kind of mac would it take to JUST record 16 channels of audio"

the same Mac that is on the Digi site I gave you.
the same OS, the same RAM amount, the same PT version, etc.

what extra figures are you looking for?

it says stuff like "minimum, recommended, blabla"

now "the excact same" would be if I could have actual figures of what I need.

I mean, does the ""recommended" spec guarantee that I'll be able to do what I wanna do, using the "recommended" spec?

at a sample rate of 44.1 i wouldnt imagine it would take up to much memory so if you have a gig or more you shouldnt have any problems

well, then maybe this will help you if you want specifics. The DaveC tests have become sort of an informal standard among the Pro Tools community:

The thread is dated from 2001 to 2006 with tons of different hardware/software combinations. Read the first post and skim through the rest of the posts to find something that's similar to what you want.

that's a PC thread...but allright thanx man, I'll look into that.

he has it setup for Mac users to use too, I think just the most of the them that replied were PC.
I think with a Mac you'd be safe with 1GB of RAM and as high a processor size you can afford. And a model that is suggested by the digidesign compatibility site (G5).
