Compression Addict
I am looking to move up from a 16 bit setup to 24 bits. I have a fostex mr-8, which is 16 bit, but i like it because i can use a usb port to transfer files to my comp. is there anything else with a usb port at 24 bit, or do i have to build a brand new comp?

The Tascam 2488...24 bits/24 tracks..usb port..I don't know much about it but it looks like its a good deal :)

16 to 24 rig

I have the Korg D1600 which does both 16 and 24 bit recording as does the Tascam 2488.

With the D1600 You can:

1. record 8 16-bit tracks simultaneously - 16 Tracks total @ 16-bit.
2. record 4 24-bit tracks simultaneously - 8 Tracks total @ 24-bit.

I just bought the 2488:

With the 2488 You can:

1. record 8 24-bit Tracks simultaneously - 24 Tracks total @ 24-bit.

There is a CD burn issue with the D1600. I think it truncates 24-bit to 16-bit when burning (not 100% sure on that). But I did ask Tascam and they dither to 16-bit when they burn to CD...better sound on the direct burn to CD.

Also... the Tascam 2488 goes for about $1199.00 at Guitar Center.

Korg D1600 Mark II and Tascam 2488

Wayne since you have both of these digital recorders (and anyone else who can help) please answer this question. I have been comparing both but want to get one of them perhaps on Friday, June 10 since I am off work then. I want the recorder for the musician in our family, my wife. She composes, sings, and plays our Kurzweil Mark 10. But, she needs to be able to run the studio when I am not around and she does not want to devote her life to electronic gadgets. Which recorder should I get for her? Thanks for posting earlier and for considering this question if it is appropriate in this thread. Regards, Jim

D1600 or 2488?

For ease of use, 16 mono tracks @ 16-bit (sufficient for putting down ideas), 16 individual faders, 16 pan knobs, touch screen... If she is not the technical type, the D1600 is the one.

If you want 12 mono tracks, 12 stereo paired tracks (24 tracks total) @ 24-bit (a slightly better sound quality), this is the one.

It is a tough call. However, assigning an input to a track is easier on the 2488, you press and hold the track input button, then press the track button. Done.

If you just want to put ideas down either will work.

In my opinion, the D1600 is designed to record, mix and master demo projects. The 2488 can do the same but gets a little more complicated on the mix end of things.

Hope this helps.

D1600 or 2488

Thank you Wayne. We are just ready to leave for Guitar Center to see if we can get the feel of both. I doubt they can beat the Musician's Buy deal though with no tax or shipping and the free Apex 435 mic. Now I am leaning toward the D1600 because it sounds like it will be easier for both of us to learn. Thanks again and regards, Jim
