As for software, Reaper is mentioned, (it's initially VERY low in cost) and again is a matter of personal preference. Protools and Cubase preferences have not been discussed, but there are other threads that deal with that I guess. QUOTE]

spending alot of money on hardware is one thing, software is another. I think spending big $$ on software is a bad idea because it doesn't hold its value.

What specifcally are you looking for in DAW software? Do you work with alot of MIDI? If you are NOT working with alot of MIDI stuff, and its pretty much straight multi-tracking stuff, look no further than Reaper. People are going nuts over this software for a reason. If you budgeted extra $$ for software, buy Reaper instead and spend that dough on a better interface.

I haven't done much midi at all, mainly because it always seemed like a moving target that would be outdated three months after purchase. So that is not very high on my list of important features. What I would like to know is how much of a difference is there between motu 2048, mk II, and mk III versions. I think I would like to purchase 1 motu ( you guys have convinced me that the extra outlay for something a little better than a 1010LT is in my best interest) and try out 8 channels at first. This will double the current unit's capabilities (a teac A-3340S.) The budget might be able to support 1 used unit, but is it worth it to save for the latest generation, or is there that much sonic difference between the original and later versions of the same units? The software choice (Reaper) seems to allow a little more room on the hardware budget.

Are you recording the whole band - live? I am/will be and was asking myself the same questions. I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ and only needed inputs not all the bloody preamps most of these things come with. I found an Echo AudioFire 12 on eBay used for $400 BIN. I decided I could work with 12 tracks and jumped on the fucker. It should be here Friday so I have a few days to build the box to plug it into.:mad:
