16-bit vs 24-bit

Guess I'm shallow. I refuse to buy records if the waveforms aren't attractive.

24 bit depth recordings sound better to my ears than those that were tracked at 16. More heft. But I think that jumping from 44,100Hz to 96,000Hz sampling rate makes much more of a difference. When you get your digital audio iface [the fast track pro, I think you mentioned] A good diy comparison for how dramatic the difference can be, is easily done by ripping a song from your favorite vinyl record to 16/44 and 24/96 wavs while maintaining the same input level between takes. Any DAW should be able to accommodate you for this test.

I definitely hear a difference between 16 and 24. When I switched to using a DAW my recordings sounded much cleaner or they had more "air" to them

I can't even think of a 16-bit interface... Don't get me wrong -- I have more than one -- But they're from the early 90's...

I bought an Alesis MultiMix 4 about a year ago...it only does 16/44.1.

Does a decent job for what it is...

The only difference between 24 bit coding and 16 bits is a lower noise floor.

The best 16bits can do is about 92dB ref 0dBFS. 24bits comes in at a massive theoretical 144dB but since even the very best analogue converter front ends will not manage better than ~110dB that is academic. The great benefit of 24 bit op' is that it allows one to record at an average of -18dBFS or even lower and thus, by default, gives lots of headroom. Essentially you do not need to worry about incoming compressors or gain riding.

There is no qualitative difference between the bit rates, nor any better "resolution".

Dave.

Just to be pedantic, you'd refer to 24 bits (or 16 or 32) as the bit depth. The other number (44.1/48/96 or whatever) is the sample rate.

As ecc83 correctly points out, the bit depth only determines the noise floor/available dynamic range. I'd be very surprised if it produced more "air" or whatever in any recording (which is not to say that the different noise floor isn't a major advantage).
