Hey... My name is Jimmy Chalk and I just started recording about a year ago. I've got a few songs up on my website and I'd like to hear what you guys think could be better. http://www.geocities.com/jimmychalk is the site, and drop me a line @ jimmychalk@yahoo.com. I'd love to hear y'alls comments.

On the site, the songs I've recorded are links titled "Nothing To Say", "I Found Love", and "Fall Away", other (not so good ones) are at the bottom.

Thanks alot, have a good one ~Jim

Let me get this straight. You're 15? If so, I'm impressed. If not, I'm still impressed. Good job.

Hey, thanks for the comment... the website is now also located at http://www.jimmychalk.com (a little easier to remember)

All the stuff on there was recorded into a Korg D1600 then transferred to cakewalk HS2002 w/ waves plug-ins to be mixed.
On the colourblind songs, I was fortunate enough to use a manley.. they rock!

Recordings sound ok.....I didnt really care for any of the songs....none of them had anything that would really reach out and grab you,but pretty good tracking/mixing though.

Hey jimmy - I listened to Nothing to say.

Man i was very impressed! Wasn't expecting that!

Were you on vocals? very good vocals - what mic did you use for them?

The bass sound is different - If thats what youre going for then fine - but i reckon a nice full sounding smooth bass line would sound better.

The piano is excellent too.

Hey guys... any ideas for improvement? I didn't WRITE or PLAY ON any of the songs... the band is in nashville now at school. Thanks for your comments. On the vocals I used a Neumann TLM 103 thru the Manley Voxbox... THAT'S why they sound good!
Check out some of the songs towards the bottom of the page as well... My bro (14) sings on the song "Everything" which was written/recorded with Noah Pearce from the band "The Deuce Project" on maverick records. Thanks again ~Jim

All I want to know is how a 15 year old got ahold of a Manley Pre and Neumann TLM103!

WHEEEEEERE! did you get your equipment!

Tell you parents you lost your equipment after you send it to ME

I guess Ill have to go listen this music when I get home!

Jimmy, I hope I'm not reading this wrong but something about this is starting to smell. Less than a year of experience, you have extremly high end gear and record bands that go to Nashville.
Hmmmmmm.............

That is a pretty damn fine recording. I don't believe a word about a 15 year old being responsible for it, but what the hell do I know. Where does a child get $4500 in gear to use is what I really want to know. I wanna see what my 9yr old son gets.

;)

HEY NOW...
Well I want to do engineering or producing for a career, so my parents are willing to help out however... I don't want this to turn into a "HOW CAN THIS KID GET THAT STUFF?" thread, lol... so, yah.. I've got nice gear, but that's not the point! I want to get better at this stuff and hear how from y'all... who've had experience!

Oh yah.. and the band is goin' to nashville for SCHOOL. Two at belmont and one at vanderbilt. It's not like they had a recording contract just to go up there.

Also... what kind of rates do you think are reasonable to charge for this type of work? Thanks for your comments... no matter WHAT they are!! ~jim

Don't lie. Please. I don't believe it.
15 years?

Anyway I like it!

Don't get excited...:D I was trying to hijack this thread into, how do I get your parents to buy me stuff because I want to be a recording Engineer and/or producer! We can sttle this quickly and painlessly by sending me everything that costs more than $19.95.

I have no problem whatsoever with believing you are 15 years old.

In my experience, young people excel at whatever they put their attention to. Consider yourself lucky, in that you know what you want to do. Most people figure out what life course they would like to pursue when they are about 30 or 40 years old. By that time they are usually locked into something they don't particularly enjoy.

Don't sweat all the naysayers. Most of us around here can't connect with the concept of not having to scrounge pennies just to buy bottom feeder gear. We have to keep in mind that there are plenty of people out there with the means to invest in their kid's future. My hats off to your parents for encouraging you on the path that your heart leads you.

I downloaded "Nothing to Say". It sounds good. How did you record the Bass? Where are you doing your recording?

Taylor

Good job on the recordings man! Would you like to lean more towards production or engineering?
