If you had a 10k rpm hard drive and another 7,200 rpm hard drive, would it make more sense to have the former being the software/os HD, and the latter being for audio, or the opposite ? Or would both situation have their advantages.

I currently use an external hard drive (Maxtor onetouch 200gb) that's 7200 for audio, and I was wondering if buying a 10k hard drive for the softwares and os would be just luxury or help me in my recording tasks.

Thanks.

For the audio stuff, I don't think you're going to see much of an improvement by having a 10k drive as your OS drive. One thing that you will probably notice is that the programs will open up faster (because seek time is lower), but once your in the program, I don't think the difference will be enough to warrant the extra cost.

I wouldn't be as concerned with the spin speed of the drive.

I used to have a couple of Ultra Wide 2 10K SCSI drives that didn't have half the throughput capabilites as my UDA 100 7200 8mb buffer IDE drives have!

So, rpm is only ONE factor in the whole equasion.
