I am currently using 1" 456 Quantegy Grandmaster with a red label. I was wondering where I can find more. Thanks!

I have a tascam MS16. You can't get quantegy any more. You can get RMGI SM911 now though which is bias compatible.

Will I have to calibrate my recorder to be able to use SM 911?
RMGI claim that SM911 is compatible with 456. I've tried both tapes and they seem almost identical to me. You won't need to recalibrate your machine.

SM911 is a fantastic tape. You will definitely be happy with it :)

You won't need to recalibrate your machine per se but even though SM911 is bias compatible you should rebias the machine whenever you change tape brands or types.

I've only tried the 1/4 SM911 tape, and it sure doesn't have any problems. I have purchased tape from US recording media but now it looks like they dont have 1" SM911 tape. :(

"Quantegy" or whatever remains of it, has 1" 406. It's "bias compatible" I've used 406 in half inch and like the sound, mellower and it's billed as +3 vs 456 as +6dB of "Ampex level"

406/407/408

This is what you wanna get:
406 Mastering Audio Tape 1" x 2500'

Plenty of hit records made on the 406.

I've used both 456 and 406 and, really, the differences are negligible, especially when you stay at reasonable levels. The 406 sounds better IMO, more natural, especially when pushed. You don't have to change anything on your recorder to use it. Use in place of 456.

Amen to 406! (And 407) Good stuff! Also look for 3M/Scotch 206 and it's thinner longer version 207. These +3 tapes from Ampex/Quantegy and 3M/Scotch where used for tracking and mastering many a classic hit in the 70's and 80's... and beyond.

ATR Magnetics is making 1" and it's supposed to be very good tape. Catching a reseller with stock can be spotty, though. I'll find out soon enough when my supply of 499 is used up.

It's also more than $300 a pop, at least in this country.

Check the spec's on the ATR tape. I believe it is somewhat thicker. 2.28 mils for ATR vs 1.97 mils for 456 and 911. That much of a difference might require some adjustment to your pinch roller pressure to keep your MS16 happy :) Regards, Dave

SPAM:

Sorry to post OT, but I just got a case (5) of Quantegy 406 1" pancakes, in boxes, mfg date 1998. The tape is still sealed and it's in its original shipping box, so I don't see any problems. Came with some other tape I bought. If anyone is interested PM me, I don't need 1" tape.
