I understand that on a interface the mics plug into the 'in' and then the signal goes through to the computer via the USB, PCI or fire wire....but what are the 'outs' for??
such as on the Motu 896... there are 8 'ins' and 8 'outs'??
thanks,
C
oh and apart from sparing a PCI slot, what are the advantages of using USB/Firewire??

The out are for anything you need them for. Monitoring, tape/HD transfers, aux's, headphone mixes, jump inserts, etc.

As far as the USB/FW is concerned, portability can be a big issue. I know people who swear by USB, others who swear AT it. Same with PCI.

I'd look for info on your particular software setup and its' compatibility with the hardware.

for getting the signal out of the computer...basically to hear it or send it to another device.
