Hey folks,
I hope this question hasn't been asked a thousand times. I'm recording some rnr with just drums and guitars. I need two mics for guitars and one for vocals and i have 4 tracks. So i have one mic for the drum set. where should I put it? (i'm not gonna bounce, so that's not an issue, i have 1 mic) thanks!

try putting it out in front of the drumset. about as high at the top of the bass drum. place it about 3-4 ft. away from the kit. just move it til you get a balanced sound...

Try these two:

The one room mic works well, too, but if you are recording the band together in one room, you'll get far too much bleed (not always a bad thing).

Greeting to Scrubs, the first picture would make the drum-kit seems like inside a box,(there are old recording with that problem),the second would have to much of Cymbals and the drums away,(like in a box), the third is about right,( I just would do a trick with the mic),but I don't have to throw all my cookies out,.. :D do I?.Gerry Zaragemca.

4th option:

put it to the right of the drummer (his right) about shoulder to head height. point it at the snare, or between the snare and the bass drum. this will minimize the cymbal sound (which is good. if the cymbals are louder than the snare, you'll be upset).

but before trying that I would go with the single overhead pic.

this all assumes you are recording with all of the instruments live.

if you are tracking the drums separately, go with the out front placement. point it at the snare.
