Hey guys,

I am about to purchase a new mic and could use a couple of quick opinions if you could. I'm financially restricted and am just a hobbyist so I am trying to keep it under $250 US. I have been lokking at the Rode nt1a as well as the Audio Technica 3035. Would I be better to get a cheaper condensor (AT2020) and a dynamic like a sm57 or 58? Would the quality of the condensors increase that much at this price level?

Thanks, for any input.
J

I record vocals (hiphop, rock), acoustic guitar, flutes, and trumpets.

I think you'll be happier with one condenser mic for your purposes.

I just recently purchased an AT 4040, and am very pleased with it for my vocals. It's way better at getting a good sound in the studio than my sm58. With the 58, I have to be more careful at setting things up just right, and staying very close to it. The 4040 was $300, so might be a little more than you're looking to spend, so just giving you my opinion on it. Nothing bad with the 58, just isn't the easiest mic for me to get sounding good.

Hey Dogman going back to my original question, would the 4040 be worth the extra $100? I mean at this price level is that extra $100 worth it. If I can get a much better product for $100 more than I would probably go that route.

Thanks,
J

Sorry, but I have no experience with the less expensive mic, so I wouldn't know if it's worth more or not. The 4040 is much better than the 58, but 2 totally different mics. Try a search on this site for some of the mics in the price range you are looking, and see if anyone has good/bad experiences for you. Sorry I'm not much help, but the 4040 is my first real try at a good mic.
Ed

Thanks for the replies. Barring a last minute change of heart I think I am going to go with the AT4040 $299 on ebay New and includes headphones (which I need a new pair of anyway) and a 20 foot mic cable.

Thanks for all the input,
J

For the money, I think you will be happy. I'm sure there are many better ones, but they cost.

Good luck.
Ed
