What does it mean when you plug something in to the first click and when you plug something in all the way? This is probably different with TS and TRS i suppose.

Yeah, the TRS plug has two separate signals. If you insert it halfway, only the signal to/from the tip is connected. The other signal has nowhere to go.

I think TS= tip, sleeve and TRS= tip, ring, sleeve, pertaining to how they are built and soldered. The tr is mono with one hot= tip, and sleeve=ground, and the trs is stereo with two hots,hot left and right=tip and ring, and sleeve=common ground. You can visually see the difference when you look at them. The trs can be used as two seperate cords as in a send and return where the tip and sleeve combo may be the send and the ring and sleeve combo may be the return. Alot of mixers are set up to be used this way. This has something to do with the way you insert the cord, I cant rememer off the top of my head, we'll have to look it up in our manuals.

And on thing the TRS connector is used for those "channel inserts" on your mixer. So if you weren't sure what to look up in your manual, theres something for ya, I'm to tired to explain inserts =)

Well...... I'm actually awake enough to have a complete thought so I'll gladly explain what the different clicks mean.
When you plug a TS jack in to the first click you get a signal directly from the preamp, and everything else works fine.
When you plug a TS jack in to the second click you will get a direct out from the preamp, but if you put the fader up you won't hear anything through the main mix. This is because when you plug it into the second click it expects to have a ring giving it a signal and when there is no ring, it touches the groud instead, so you get no singal going back to the mixer. BUT you still have a signal going from the preamp, out the insert and to wherever you sent it =)
And when you plug a TRS jack in to the second click you get the signal being sent through the tip into wherever you sent it, then it comes back through the ring and back into the mixer so you can hear the glory of your newly processed signal =)
Now I'm tired again =)

One more question though (hope you got some sleep

How does the sound go to and come back from whatever you sent it to through one cable? Don't you need to go in and out of your effects unit (or whatever)? That should use two cables right?

hehehe ya....... sorry bout that, I kinda assumed the whole splitter thing.
Yes, you do need a splitter cable to use the channel insert with the TRS jack plugged in to the second click.
The spitter can either be a TRS jack that splits into 2 seperate cords each with a TS male jack on the end. Or it can be a TRS male jack that spilts and goes to 2 TS female jacks, then you use 2 TS cables to hook things up from there......
And then from there you would plug the TS that is comign from the tip into the input of you fx unit, then take the TS jack that is coming from the ring and put it into the output
