Just a thought and its been awhile since I bounced any tracks. But if you are using dbx could you be trying to get to much out of the machine? Tascam does not recomend levels of 0 when using dbx. Does the machine work if you bring the levels back to say 7 or 8?

You can monitor off of the deck. You just need to push the monitor input button. plus you can do sound on sound recording with the 22-2.

I like it. I have been getting new unopened rolls off ebay. It works great and sounds great on my tascam 22-4 and 22-2. Its one of the tapes they recommend for that machine. And it doesnt get sticky.

You dont have to do any mods to the dx4d. THe dx4d works on any machine that a dx9 does. And yes if you record something with any dbx you need to use dbx to play it back

I would look for a DX4d from tascam. I am almost positve it will work with your machine. Its newer and is alot easier to use than the old dx9. The Dx9 has old manual relays init. and you have to fool wiith the switches on it. Go for the Dx4d.
