    How Different Are These Compressors?

hey chessrock, got my uad card installed monday and let me tell you it will blow you away. So far all I've messed with are the Pultec (incredible on shaping low end and bringing out high end sparkle) the La-2a (makes everything sound huge) and the 1176 (seems to inhance clarity and depth)...

    Be My Monitors

Good song, refreshingly different in a good way. The mix is good overall. Vocal sounds good but a little harsh up around 6 to 8k. The overall mix levels are a little lacking in the low mid- upper low area which are making the mids seem a little harsh. Maybe a gentle boost around 400hz with...

Another new monitor, new song thread

mixmkr, I know the part you are referring to though I don't think it is real dissonance. The song is in C and the string quartet part are still in C. The beating you hear is the viola and cello a half step from each other that is emphasized by a similar sample loop. It bothered me a little...

Another new monitor, new song thread

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. SLuiCe, I think your right, I will try a slight boost in the verses. I'm surprised no one has asked what the new monitors are. Dynaudio Bm6a's, I upgraded from Event 20/20 bas. Although I really liked the Events, I couldn't be more pleased with the...

Another new monitor, new song thread

Thanks for the kind words sabbath. I always seem to do that with my vocals. To me, I felt they were a bit too loud. When I record other people they always want me to pull their vocal down and I always say trust me. Greg

Another new monitor, new song thread

I've had my new monitors about a month now but haven't had a chance to mix on them until now. Life keeps getting in the way of music. Here is the link. www.nowhereradio.com/gregkat The song is "want" Any comments would be helpful. Greg

    Recent "Rescue" operation

Good job. The low end and low mids sounded much tighter and distinct. Greg

    Monitors

As someone who owns a pair of Dynaudio BM6A, I have to agree with you they do sound like stereo speakers, incredible stereo speakers. The problem a lot of people seem to have with these speakers is that on first listen they sound kind of ordinary, nothing special. Even with that said I was...

    Quality plugins? Eq, comps.

Try the ultrafunk plug-ins by Sonitus. I also have the Waves plug-ins but I gotta tell you. I like ultrafunk eq better, especially in the high end. You can crank it and it doesn't sound gritty. Also the compressor is quite good. Their effects are low cpu users also.

    I wanna listen!

Thanks waldo, Actually "The One" is the new song even though I uploaded it a couple of weeks ago. If you have a chance let me know what you think of it. As far as "I Will" I agree with you about the hi-hat when it opens. I wanted some emphasis maybe not that much Thanks again for your kind...

    best way to record vioin?

I agree with Harvey, the violin and the player will dictate which placement is best. I recorded a violinist today(wedding music demo). I used a Oktava MC-012 into a Grace 101. With this violinist( I've worked with him before) overhead sounds a bit screechy. So, I came from the front at...

    Mastering with T-Racks

I own T-racks24 and have Waves plug-ins that I use with Sound Forge 5.0. If you are new to "home " mastering T-racks is by far the easiest to use. You also might want to check out Izotope Ozone. It's about 2 bills and sounds good but slightly more complicated. If you want great sound but...

Rode NTK Mic. Any comments on it?

Love mine. I've looked for years to find a mike that I like for my voice (low tenor).

    Awash in Reverb

Sounds like a room problem to me. I have Event 20/20 bas and after experimenting with a small amount of absorbsion and diffusion, I have mixes that translate well on any system. Even if you had $10,000 monitors, if you have problems in your room, your gonna have problems in your mix.

Name the best soundcards you know of

Hard to go wrong with M-Audio Delta Series. Good converters and good drivers. I get less than 2ms latency.

    EQ techniques: Newbie

I disagree, unless your using eq to completely alter the sound. For me the purpose of eq is to bring clarity to the mix. After you have your levels and panning roughed out and used your effects and reverb to your desired effect, then you can really tell where the kick and bass are...

    EQ techniques: Newbie

I ass/u/me I need to EQ to get a better separation and identiy or clarity of instruments in the mix. After getting my levels and panning I usally add my effects next. Before eq. I force myself to never touch an eq unless it's absolutely needed. It's suprising how little eq you need if you...
