No you don't need to have an iLok. You can authorise it using a code, however I'd recommend using an iLok as then you can take it around with you.
Secondly, it doesn't matter what hardware you have when it comes to Pro Tools in general... It's the software level which matters in the majority of...
Well, it's the least processor hungry plug-in of the lot. It has very few features, therefore is less likely to confuse a newbie. After all, it only does Gain, Mute and Polarity Invert (maybe one more thing... I forget).
I also felt that the OP wouldn't know what the Digirack plugins were, and...
You need to insert the plugin called "Trim".
It's a mono plugin, so if you're working on a stereo track you'll have to select "RTAS Multi-Mono Plugins".
The first question you should ask is "Why do I want a soundproof booth?"
Unless there is a crazy amount of noise coming in from outside, a soundproof booth is not ever going to improve your recordings.
If you want to avoid annoying your neighbours when playing the drums late at night, then...
Sorry to not answer your question, but...
I wouldn't use "over heads" to record a string quartet anyway. Use a proper stereo technique such as an XY pair, or an ORTF or NOS pair etc. I probably wouldn't even use the final mic.
That will happen most of the time regardless of phantom power.
You should always cut the monitors/PA (simply pull the master fader down, or hit a mute button, etc.) when you (un)plug anything... Common sense.
You don't know what signal will be coming into the desk when you plug in, so having...
I agree; it's a dead-end.
Unless you're getting a ridiculous deal, I'd look at getting the lowest spec Mac Pro at the very least.
This is coming from a G5 Quad Owner.... I'm happy with my system as is, but it's already paid for itself a couple of times over.
You can't install PT9 on a Leopard machine. You must have Snow Leopard installed.
Pro Tools 9 is probably worth the upgrade, if you need delay compensation, or if you want to use a third party interface, but in terms of other features it's probably not worthwhile.
Great post, John.
I didn't mean to say that ORTF will not pick up ambient sound.
However from my experience, I've found it difficult to get the pair far enough away from the choir to make it feasible to get a sound which is not somewhat dry. Main reason being that the front row of chairs is...
The single most important consideration is what kind of space are you recording in? Is it a church or concert hall with a nice sound? Or is it a crappy hall which sounds dreadful?
If it's a great sounding room, then a great technique to use is a blumlein pair, using two figure of 8s in an XY...
Post a little bit more about your recordings, and what you do.
I say this often, but I would find it hard to believe that the converters or pres in the 003 are anywhere near the limiting factors in your recordings.
I've made some great sounding recordings with the 003, and with far worse pres...
I recommend starting your own thread so as not to confuse your questions with the original poster's.
Even better, you could search through the forums to find a thread which already has the answer on it!
Welcome to the forums :)
Actually, if you have a Pro Tools 9 HD auth on your iLok, then you can run the software with any ASIO or Core Audio interface, with the features of Complete Production Toolkit 2 added.
If only I could afford a Mac Pro...
Whilst the clock in the 002 may not be the best on the market, it's not going to be the limiting factor in your setup.
Try to look at the bigger picture here!
Like I said, get some good converters (clock to them too) and you're laughing. Even then the converters in the 002 are not dreadful and...
