I think 40W might be overkill for home recording only. Have you tried anything by Orange? They mightn't do Metal but they do most other things, and as you said, a good pedal will you take care of the heavy stuff. They have a lush OD. If it were me, I'd take a look at some head/cab options.

So in the end I pulled the trigger on an Orange OR15 head. Looks pretty nice, a slightly more specc'd out Tiny Terror. Should be here Monday, maybe Tuesday and I'll be plugging it into one or two Vox Night Train speakers. All there is to do now is restring a Telecaster and wait! :)
