I've been working on a mix for a while now and can't get the vocals to "sit back" in the mix. Everything I've tried has always resulted in the vocals sounding like they're just sitting on top of the music instead of just part of the song. What are some common methods (if any) to fix this?

I've been working on a mix with Sony Vegas and finally got it to sound the way that I wanted it to. But when I export the song as a wav file and then look at it in Goldwave, the whole thing is shifted up above 0.0db, except for a few transients. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about...
