    from ADAT to PC

There're real cheap ADAT cards out there going for about $100-150. What you described will work, but like Ziggy says: your stock sound card isn't doing much good. Herwig

    HD24 newbie

Errr... I don't have the HD24 yet, but I think I read in the text of one of the OS updates that they changed the structure to 99 Projects which can contain 99 songs each ... <2 minutes later> yep, since version 1.10 you can have 99 projects with 99 songs in each one... My idea is to use 120Gb...

    Recording in club

There's different usb or firewire mobile solutions out there... M-Audio, Edirol, RME, Motu, ... I'd prefer firewire though, I heard that usb loses some bits between the interface and the harddisk. Herwig

    bass strings touching pick ups

Another beginners' mistake is that people tend to pluck the bass strings instead of more 'raking' them ... the movement your plucking finger makes should be more parallel with the bass, rather than away from it, if you see what I mean... this'll help smoothing out notes . Herwig

    Recording in club

If you have a laptop and/or can afford an Apogee Mini-Me, go that way. MD and DAT are inferior recording media. Herwig

    16bit vs 24 bit

(sort of quoting Bob Ohlssen here:) 24bit convertors are indeed better than their 16bit counterparts, but it's also a matter of implementation. There's still nothing that can beat a Mitsubishi's 24track 15bit convertors ... ... until you can afford that, go 24bit for tracking and mixing, but...

Poll: What Mixer Do You Use?

    External Power Supplies

I'd say: power strip at back of rack or one of those power strips with the outlets at the back, rackmountable and a power switch on the front (may need a 1U blank above and/or below if there's a lot of warts) Off course all cables nicely zip-tied :D Herwig

Bought Gear based on this Forum

Yes and no ... I've based my little microphone cabinet on a) positives reviews over different boards, not restricted to HR.com B) what I see in studio's when recording as a musicisian c) whatever good deal pops along on my way... Behrie ECM8000 (first mic's) SM57 (bacause they're classic) AKG...

    Studio Monitors

I know this has been beaten to death, but I stronlgy suggest NOT touching any equalising... It's better to learn what the faults in your system are than trying to correct them... Let me give an example: Imagine you have a room with a problem in the 60Hz-area, for instance a 6db bump in that...

    Help! Mic'ing Double (upright) bass...

I know it's too late, but anyay: Had following stuff done with my upright: [styles range from jazz to folk to light classic to dance-pop] - use elastic rubbers or foam to put a mic between the legs of the bridge - had a B&K on that, don't remember which model (I was told that's the old jazz...

How Do You Record/Reproduce Good Reggae Bass Sound?

... once read this article about a session player doing a lot of dub and reggae.. he used a 60ies P-bass for it WITH THE ORIGINAL FLATWOUNDS on it ... talk about deep, dead tone without sustain.. Flatwounds help , heavy gauge strings help, high action helps, cutting all treble/tone helps...

    Studio Monitors

It'll work in a sense that you will get audio from your speakers, but remember that any chain is as weak as its weakest link... in your case the amplifier... 'reference' amps are made to reproduce sounds in a 'purer' way (less harmonic distortion, uncolored amplification,...). But it works, and...

    HD24 newbie

Thanks Bruce. That input-mixing thing seems interesting... for example when recording 16 tracks I could send some tracks via lightpipe to a computer, add (almost - depends on latency) realtime effects to them and play them back through the last 8 digital inputs ... a poor man's outboard :cool...

FS: (3) ST Audio DSP 2000 8i/o soundcards

Hi y'all, (this is mainly an ad for European viewers, but I'm happy to ship to any nation worldwide) I've just bought a standalone 24track recorder so I'm dumping my previous audio solution: 3x ST Audio DSP2000: DSP24 soundcard with ADC/DAC 2000 breakout-box. The card has a special audio...
