    Muttley, Advice if You Please

Mutt, I have a Fender Telecaster that's giving me a couple of problems. It's an American Deluxe Ash Tele, fairly new (2007 I think). First: The high E string keeps popping out of the nut, because the slot is very shallow. Short of having a new nut cut, do you think installing a string tee...

The Mute Strings With Your Hands Trick

Hey Any of you guys use the "mute strings with your hands" trick? It's where you actually use your hands to mute strings that you don't want to be ringing, and that mutes all unwanted noise when playing a solo and you don't have to wrap a cloth around the top of the neck. I find it necessary...

    Hey, Mutt!

Gibson has just introduced an interesting new model - it's a Les Paul Studio with two P-90s rather than humbuckers. It's a nice-looking instrument at a decent price. One thing that caught my eye in Gibson's discription is that the (chambered) mahogany body is two-piece, rather than a single...

    Dumbass!

I was getting kind of uptight last week as I have been having some random intermittent issues with the MIDI connection on my guitar rig's MIDI footboard controller. Sometimes I would not be transmitting any MIDI at all from the controller and sometimes it would work fine, and when it worked fine...

Truck Bed Liner for Speaker Cab Finish

This weekend I'm going to start on a 2 X 12 cab. I'm going to model it on the Avatar "contemporary" style, which looks like the modern Orange cabs, with the very thick front edging. Instead of tolex or cabinet carpet, I'm going to apply pickup truck bed liner to the exterior of the cab, in the...

    Triple P-90 Guitars

Gotta have one. Reverend has the Warhawk II 390: http://www.reverendguitars.com/reverend/guitars/set_neck_series/warhawk_2_390.html Hanson, a new player in the guitar world, has the Cigno: http://www.hansonguitars.com/cigno-st.htm They sound great. I love the combination of a set neck with...

    Neck Question for Muttley

Hey, Mutt - I have an interesting situation on my cheap Xaviere Strat-like guitar. The neck, with the truss rod adjustment nut at only finger-tightness, has very little relief - it's almost flat. I can tighten the truss rod nut and achieve an upward bow in the (middle of the) neck (is this...

    Zaphod'd New Amp Rig

Zaphod's New Amp Rig I finally got around to taking a few pictures of The Rig From Hell. This first picture shows the Egnater M4 preamp in a rack with a Furman power supply, atop the Randall RT2/50 power amp which is in a separate 2RU case. The 2 X 12 cab is a homebuilt that I put together...

    Dean Markley Vintage Strings

The "originals" as I know 'em, they're now labeled as "vintage" after not having been offered for a few years. I've been playing on these strings for a long, long time and they offer a great combination of tone and longevity. Nothin' fancy, just nickel-plated steel. What's better: MF is...

    Hey, Muttley!

I'd like your comment on a new Gibson Custom Shop release, particularly the bridge. It's the Les Paul Tribute 1952 reissue, and the bridge is (allegedly) faithful to the original bridge patent. Link at Gisbon...

    Egnater M4 Preamp

On Friday when I got back from a business trip, my Egnater M4 preamp was waiting at the front door. :) For those of you not familiar with it, the M4 is a modular preamp component of a rack-mounted guitar amplifier setup. It is an all-tube affair that houses up to 4 individual preamp modules...

    Attention Moderators

Please do something about Victory Pete's trolling in this forum. What little knowledge he has is more than offset by his crapping over every informative post. Enough is enough. We communicated about this before and VP calmed down for a short while, and now he's worse than ever. His buddy...

2488: Has Anyone Had Their Transport Buttons Replaced?

I know it's been a fairly common complaint about 2488's - that the transport buttons get recalcitrant or stop working altogether. (rewind / play / stop / ff / record) My rewind button has been iffy for a while, needing more effort than the others. Now the play button is doing the same. I...

Guitar FX: Which ones belong in the amp's FX loop...

....and which ones should be out front? I'm thinking that overdrives, boosters, wahs, compessors and EQs should be out front, whereas reverb and delay might be better suited in the amp's FX loop. Does that seem right? How about LFOs (chorus, phaser, flanger, etc.)?
