it's very true that there's an acoustics component to headphones, much as there are with speakers. In the case of headphones, your inner ear canal is the "room" the speaker is playing into. This Means that you at least need to find ear gels that fit properly so that you don't wind up with anemic...
And an update on the interface. I went with an Apollo Twin X quad. Aside from being a bit annoyed that I am now locked into the UAD ecosystem forevermore, the fidelity of the mic preamps, headphone amp and line outs are all outstanding.
Agreed, listening to headphones at loud levels is an ear-death wish.
I would differ on your conclusions about the fidelity of headphones as a general concept, though many headphones have been poorly designed and sound terrible, but have been well marketed and are therefore popular. The number...
When I was new to audio, I had to rely on the opinions of others on what I should buy for gear. What I've learned is that there is a lot of "snake oil" in the audio industry, and it's mixed with pixie dust for good measure.
Now that I've been at this a while, have gotten some seriously great...
yeah at this point for me it's more of a technical thing to remove possible issues. Output impedance can change the tone of a pair of headphones. It may be slight, but that slight difference makes a big difference later on as tonal decisions start piling up. And if those headphones are...
A couple of thoughts I've had on this ...
I was on the "mastered headroom" bandwagon for a long time, until I realized that intersample clipping is mostly an audiophile issue - most people don't notice it at all. And the majority of true peak limiting that I've auditioned sounds worse than just...
I've been researching buying a new interface since my old computer is aging and I've upgraded to a Macbook Pro M2.
I have an Apollo interface, which was a huge step up from what I had been using (Scarlett). For tracking and mixing, I'm Apollo all the way. I love those little tanks.
But for...
One caveat ... the conversion process does turn UP the volume (due to the sampling process). Apple roundtrip can help with deciphering what happens when your song is converted for streaming. A free VST like Lese Codec could do this as well. I really like ADPTR Streamliner.
The other thing I...
I'm late to the thread, but the "distortion" you are hearing is sampling washiness from the filter used on spotify, youtube etc. Tidal is lossless and should't have this problem. As you noticed, The Apple music one is decent, so that's a big clue.
This has nothing to do with the loudness of...
Neuron and EZ mix are two options. They both still require your judgement call on what sounds good.
There isn't really anything yet I know of that will analyze an individual track and apply the processing the track "needs" independently of any other input. There would be a context problem of...
hmmm. I might be able to recreate the vibe of EQ balancing + in a large room through some good speakers (that you could perceive listening in buds or a sound bar or whatever you've got). Would you want to explore that?
It's a combination of mixing and mastering.
Song A is tilted toward 12k brightness and has a sub-low bump to compensate. But it's balanced because it sounds good on many speakers, because the midrange is smooth.
Song B is pretty balanced across the entire frequency spectrum to me. It will...
That is very true.
I've learned that FM radio runs everything through an algorithm that compresses and EQs the signal.
But it's not by choice. It's a function of the bandwidth of FM signals. FM can transmit lossy stereo signals efficiently across very long distances (esp on clear nights)...
You could use pink noise (or a sine wave) to see what frequency you stop hearing during a sweep at a volume set while listening to your favourite song.
To set that level, you could import a song (rip a CD, use WASPI mode in Reaper on PC, or use Soundflower on Mac. Turn down the master fader...
Start with balancing the low end and work up front there.
Also, manage your hearing ... Esp in the low mids. If you currently hear low mids, cherish that
Harmonic distortion is hard to fix
I have learned how to fix it (and have fixed it for my clients) but it's better to not go there in the first place :)
This is a tricky question .. you have to make sure you mix sounds good across all playback systems, or is optimized for venue vs home. I am interested in seeing if my ears can make that happen .. zero charge for one track as I'm very curious. DM me if you want
I don't think there's much of a need to do a remix. The stems were good quality. Here's what I came up with as a first master.
I referenced against some Underoath as the drum tones were similar.
I tried to keep the crispiness of the original mix, but tamed it and did some work on the midrange...
I think your tone is close and just needs to be tweaked. Could you post a WAV that is un-processed? I'd like to do a master and see if I can bring out all of the detail and punch of the track while keeping it edgy
#edit ... now that I've downloaded, I see that this is a stem mastering situation.
I'm not looking for tips, no. But I'm also not looking to soley fix problem mixes.
I figure it's a way for everyone to learn more about mastering by doing it, and we can all learn from each other by communicating what we do to get results.
